my inner child

June 11, 2018 6:48am CST
I am knackered this morning. It’s my own fault though as yesterday saw me realise a thirty year dream. I saw A-ha! Live! My inner child, the one who wrapped thin leather round her wrists and lusted after Pål whilst singing loudly to songs only she could hear through her spongy orange headphones, is now very satisfied. It’s been a fair few years since we saw a band live. I think Muse may have been the last – back in 2013 - but perhaps my memory fibs. Regardless, I've never been to a concert with so many OLD people. Then I realised the truth. I am one of those old people. *sigh* I may be telling a porkie. It is possible that there were lots of older folk at the Eels gig we went to a while ago. Anywhichway, I can now tick A-ha off my *must see before I desert this mortal coil* list. And, quite by chance, OMD and Tom Bailey, who was half of the Thompson Twins, too. Now, who wants to come and see Rick Astley with me in November?

Can you believe that I never went to a live concert? It's not even on my wishlist, I was born "old".

@Poppylicious It's not which kind of music, I cannot stand live concerts.

@LadyDuck Not even a nice sit-down on a blanket with a picnic type of concert?

Even though I can't bear crowded and loud places, I love going to concerts. I think it's because you can just be a face in the crowd. We're going to see 2Cellos next month, which I am really looking forward to. That might be more your cup of tea. :)

@poppylicious Oh, 1986 - A Ha was part of the sound track to my year living in Paris. We briefly considered calling our son who was born there in that year Morten. The notion wore off. Not what about tickets to hear Lieutenant Pigeon?

@Poppylicious Now I don’t feel so old that someone else remembers them.

@xFiacre I did have to look them up. I do remember hearing that song, although it was before my time!

I think not. A bit old and mouldy for my tastebuds.

'Old'? Nah! You ain't old! Now, if you had said that you overjoyed to have gone to see Lonnie Donegan, Bill Haley and the Comets, Harry Belafonte or even Adam Faith or Cliff Richard, then I might have conceded that you had been young for rather a long time. No, it's me that's old because I don't even know who these people are (well, OK, I had vaguely heard of the names). Checking on their dates, I see that what I was listening to then was mostly Bagpuss, Pigeon Street, Mr Benn and The Herbs. Never heard of those bands? No, well you wouldn't have unless you were either 3 or 4 at the time or were the stay-at-home parent of a toddler/pre-school child!

Of course I've heard of those 'bands'. They were my favourites when I was a toddler! You missed out The Flumps. They were really tuneful. :)

@Poppylicious I didn't really feel I could list them all (and, anyway, my memory index appears to be a little faulty and it sometimes can't find the names, even though it can hear the tuines and see the images!). Nobody I speak to seems to remember the Pieman (a precursor to Bagpuss, I think, or, anyway, of the same genre). Then there was Ivor the Engine and Roobarb and Custard - all good stuff which could appeal to the adult 'watching with', as well as the child. We'll say nothing about George and Zippy and Bungle, perhaps. That was a very naughty program!!

@owlwings I loved Ivor the Engine! And everybody loved Rainbow. I still find myself humming the tune sometimes.

For some reason this surprises me!

Funny that I know their songs (love them), but never noticed the name of the band until reading your post. From what you said there, the quality of their performance was good. Congrats.

Yep, I suspect most folk know at least a couple of their songs, even if they don't know them. It was a good night. :)

@Poppylicious Do you know who was the young and attractive lady who often appeared in those clips of theirs (eg, Take On Me, youtube)?

Knackered is a great expressive word. Morten Harket has a great voice, as does Rick Astley. In fact I prefer Rick's recent stuff to that from the 80's. I also remember the Thompson Twins being a group of 3 in their heyday. A strange misnomer.

It must be 40 years since I went to any big name concert. And very few I went to even then

I was playing dress up and running around the garden in my underwear forty years ago!

@Poppylicious Thanks for the invite and really do not know who he is so I will pass. I have not been to a live concert in ages. I cannot remember the last one I saw. Concert tickets here in Israel are very expensive. I would rather watch them online.

They're not cheap here, either! The bizarre thing is that I really cannot watch live music on the telly. I can only watch it live in the flesh.
