What Is Your Average Grocery Bill A Week?

United States

I am trying to do some cutting back on some expenses. What is your average grocery bill in a week. There are me and my son. I am curious as to what the a average weekly bill cost. Even though I work I still need to cut back. Sometimes I look at the prices, and just shake my head. Please let me know, it will be appreciated.

We sort of share costs around here. If I was to sum it up between the three of us? I'd say maybe $130 a week? Stretching meals helps. Whether that be making enough for left overs or taking left over peas and thawing out the hamburger that's been in the freezer for a few months and making hamburger steaks out of it. Buying things that can be incorporated in many dishes helps as well. For instance, grab a few cans of things like Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken when they go on sale at your grocery store. Cream of Mushroom can be used in making green bean casserole or you can incorporate it with your hamburger steak as the "sauce" or "gravy". Cream of Chicken is similar, it can be the base for several different chicken soups and dishes. Tomato soup is the same. I've grabbed a can of tomato soup up when I don't have enough spaghetti sauce, and I've also opened a can and made a few grilled cheeses too. Bacon can be frozen, bread can be frozen, butters as well. Heck, I think even milk (though certain milks don't freeze well). Hmm.. I could go on.

@NJChicaa I don't use them often myself but I can recall my childhood and how my mom would have to stretch dollars. Soups were just one of those ways. There are always vegetables in plastic packages that go on discount at the grocery store as well, I hadn't thought of that.

I agree with all of your tips except canned soup. That stuff is straight from the devil. I wouldn't ever use it in my cooking or eat it on its own.

I just quit my job so will have to cut back on expenses. I only have SS now and everything is going up. The rent just did. And the utilities. I ate from the dollar store for a long while and can always do it again if I have to.

$150 a week for 12 people. Although if I see a good meat sale, I have a huge freezer and do take advantage of it so that may affect it sometimes but most weeks $150.

@popciclecold I watch for sales, use store brands and have a tight budget. Not much flex room there.

@sh2ker WOW. We have nothing like that close to me. To get that many stores I would have to 60 miles outside of where I live.

I have no idea. I make out lists and my husband shops. I'm sure it must be pretty hefty though. My guess is about $600 a month.

Ours is always monstrous. I like to cook, I cook from scratch, and I don't buy processed foods. For 2 people, each week I spend anywhere between $100-150 depending on what I'm making. Today I did the weekly shop and it was $104. That's because I'm planning to use mostly meat from the freezer in the coming week for dinners.

I only spend about 80 a week for groceries in a week for 2 people. The first thing is I buy almost no name brands. No pop, candy or chips. Same with those sweetened flavored drinks. The price is over inflated. If you want those buy kool aide packets and mix your own. The unsweetened packets also give you the ability to control the sugar content. Then I also cook at home. This time of year I do spend a little more as I will buy frozen dinners to fix when we have been very busy. They are just easy and dont heat the house up. But most days I cook.

It depends on a persons likes and dislikes. I suggest cutting out things you don't need, like junk food. I buy once a month, not by the week.
