Alright with the snakes already!

While we were at the herb class, Karyn, the teacher got a phone call. From her neighbor. She lives next door to a small park. It seems a black snake had curled up around the bars of the equipment. Then it crawled down and went under the cars parked for the class. They said that they had called the city to come get it. I do not believe our city does that. Karyn said she had seen one out basking in the sun in her garden this week as well. It seems to be a good year for snakes.

You can keep them in Kansas please. My cousin texted me a few months back, apparently a snake made it's way into their house.

I know we have had them in the shed. I am glad that they eat the rats and mice.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Well these are black. No Kansas venomous snake is black. We have copperheads and three types of rattlers. I still would not want to get bit.

@GardenGerty Oh yes they definitely have benefits. I don't know how to tell the venomous from the non venomous.

Snakes are everywhere, but you may not hear about them.

@Courtlynn I am not sure where you are. There are more of them where it is warmer and there is more open ground. Kansas and Oklahoma qualify there.

Blame it on concrete jungles that are mushrooming the world over. These poor beings have been displaced, sadly

No, the ones here have lots of habitat. There is an entire empty field across the road and a woodsy area in back of me. A vacant house is beside me. I think these snakes are feasting on rodents.

@GardenGerty As long as they feast on rodents and do no harm then that is a good thing

I am always afraid of snakes. I don't believe there are good snakes as for me all snakes are traitor even to their masters and also harmful.

I think we will use the mower enough now to discourage snakes making a home in it.

No, this is not a poisonous snake. There are four poisonous snakes in Kansas. Three are rattle snakes and one is a copperhead. None of them are lazy old black rat snakes.

@GardenGerty That's nice to hear. However, the idea of seeing a snake is not also a good thing for me. We do have some snakes here. A bolo will be handy to kill them.

This season is always a good season for black snakes. We have many, they are not poisonous and they city does not send people to get rid of them because they do no harm. They are even protected, they eat mice and slugs.

Our city does not have enough employees to control dogs, let alone snakes. Like you, I am fine with them eating the mice.

@GardenGerty In the case of fear of frogs it is because of their long tongues snapping at me.

At my other place I did not see them, although the kids would find them (garter snakes) in water meters from time to time. Here there are more open spaces without buildings. I see more of them.

Those black snakes do bite I believe but aren't poisonous I don't think. I had a pretty milk snake in my back yard a few days ago my son almost stepped on. First time I ever saw one up close like that.

Yes, we have seen several this year already. We had to get one out of the basement. The kids left the basement garage door open and it got in. I don't like them in the yard, I especially don't like them in the house. They are fine in the woods next to us.

We do not have a basement, but we do have a crawl space. Not that we crawl in it. A plumber might have to. I am pretty sure they are in our shed in back as it has a dirt floor and space to crawl in.
