Vegetables....Do You Sneak Them Into Your Recipes??

Yesterday as I was having a left-over Sloppy Joe's, I was wondering if others do what I like to do sometimes. I will sneak veggies into things that I am cooking like Sloppy Joe's or even my spaghetti sauce. I have been doing this since my children were small. I like to use spinach since it doesn't have an over powering taste and if you chop it finely then you can tell them it is just the herbs you use. Which is what I did when they were much younger. Now that they are older, they know what it really is but they like it so it's no problem to get them to eat it. I had read an article about sneaking veggies into recipes if you're children don't want to eat them. You can use pureed vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, or even squash. They have mild flavors and the kids won't realize they are eating vegetables. They get all the nutrients without the headache of forcing them to eat them. I am fortunate that my children aren't really picky about the foods they eat. They both have healthy appetites and like to eat vegetables. Maybe not all vegetables, but enough that they get important nutrients that they provide. Have you ever done this? What were your results?

My children grew up eating salads every day and so never had a problem. I love vegetables and enjoy eating them.

@morgoodie Very nice! My daughters are 46 and 42 and the last time I took them to a restaurant and they chose vegetarian dishes and so did my grandchildren. Interesting!

@1hopefulman My kids are 12 and 11 and are healthy eaters. I don't think either of them will become vegetarian at least not at this point. They like their meat too much. It is interesting that some kids today choose to be vegetarians.

My daughter loves salads and will eat them a lot. My son would rather have cooked veggies versus raw ones. But I have gotten him to have lettuce on his burgers or other sandwiches. They eat a nice variety of veggies.

My daughter doesn't like vegetables, she only likes meat. But if I cut up the vegetables and put them into the meat to make dumplings, she will eat them.

That is a good way to get her to eat vegetables by putting them into something she will eat. Maybe as she gets older she will like vegetables more.

Yes I have to do that for my granddaughter as she hates them! I like to put them in cottage pies but she will still pick out all the little bits of mushroom and leave them on the side of the plate! I always make sure she eats plenty of fruit to compensate.

@morgoodie Teagan is really fussy about everything although she likes pasta, potatoes and rice so I will always include one of those in our dinner. She's very slim and I want her to stay that way. She has a friend who really isn't well looked after and she only likes bread and jam. I hate it when she comes for dinner as she doesn't like anything. She's the same age as Teagan but overweight and rather unkempt to look at. You think her mum would look after her better as at age 11 they still need looking after and reminding about hygiene.

@sprite1950 Neither of mine are all that fussy. They like a good amount of veggies and fruits. Grace is the ideal weight for her height. Elijah is overweight a bit, but I am hoping he will slim down once he hits his growth spurt. I can't imagine that girl is getting the right nutrition if all she eats is bread and jam. Poor thing. Grace is almost 13 and I still have to hound her to take a shower and brush her teeth. It's ridiculous and I told her that too.

Fruits are a good way to compensate. My daughter doesn't like mushrooms either. She just picks them off the pizza when we have it.

I don’t need to do that and my parents do not need to do that too as we like to eat vegetables.

I don't do it very often either. Just when I don't feel like cooking a separate veggie. My kids like vegetables.

I don't remember my parents sneaking veggies into my food when I was little because I eat my vegetables, though there are some that I don't, its okay with them because I still eat. Now that I'm all grown up, I eat my veggies even more. But there are kids who don't like veggies so its nice that parents get creative in finding ways to sneak them in their meals. They need all the nutrition they can get from them anyways.

Yeah mine never did either. We just had to eat them or not leave the table until we did. Nowadays parents have to get more creative when they have picky eaters.

@morgoodie thanks to the net, parents can now look for recipes on how to sneak veggies into kids foods. Even youtube have videos about it.

My children love to eat veggies and salads. So I do not have to try these tricks very often. But surely some days they want some new recipes for a change and I try several tricks like mixing them in dough etc.

Yeah I don't have to sneak them in their food, but it does make for new recipes. I am glad your children love to eat veggies too.

@morgoodie I am lucky that I have always cooked for them and they had to eat what was on plate. They got used to it.

I love spinach raw so I actually eat it on sandwiches with lettuce and add it to my salads. Now that it is summer I eat vegetables more often so I don't need to sneak them anymore. LOL

@morgoodie If you ever make "subs" just throw a little of everything on it. The spinach and lettuce mixture is so good. I have been told when I eat a sub it looks like a salad on bread. LOL

I am fortunate my kids like it so they don't fight me about eating it. You really can't taste the spinach when it is mixed with other foods. But all the nutrients are beneficial to us.

Yup. I put cooked carrots into our chili. When my daughter was very young and just starting to eat real food, I put banana bites in with cooked green beans. "Green bean stew."

Those are good ideas. They used to love cooked carrots. My daughter would put ketchup on them and nearly everything else too!

I saw video clips of parents forcing their kids to eat veggies. The latter either ended up crying or throwing up.

Yes, I can imagine that crying and vomiting would take place after being forced to eat veggies. I can remember having to sit at the table for what always felt like hours to eat the veggies on my plate. The veggies I hated as a child, I now love as an adult.

@morgoodie Very smart. You prepared them when they were young so now they will eat it automatically. Now, I see why you said you sneak things into what you make. I am having sloppy joes for my Sabbath meal. I love them.

Thank you. I figured if they ate them at a young age then they would eat them as they grew older. So far it has worked. I don't force them to eat them if they don't like them, but they do have to have at least two bites at least. I love putting spinach in dishes because you really can't taste it. Spinach was very good in the sloppy joes I made.

When I was a kid itself ,everyday we had more of vegetables at home. My father prefers vegetables than fish and meat. Vegetables are more healthy than meat and fish. My parents used to give me and my sister vegetable soup also.

I eat more than when I was a child. My kids eat more than I used to too. But it's nice to add to the dish instead of them being separate.
