Some people do things at a supermarket or grocery store that shouldn't be done

Sometimes when I am shopping at a supermarket or a grocery store I notice people do things that I would never do and in my opinion shouldn't be done by others either. Opening an egg carton to check for cracked eggs is fine. I do that myself as well. But if an egg is cracked, I just put the carton back, take another one and check to see if that one is fine. What I've seen others do is open more than one carton of eggs, examine each egg, and then switch eggs between cartons, regardless if they are cracked or not. Some people will open a container of berries and check to see if there are any bad ones. That is okay. But then there are people that switch berries between containers. Like they will put the spoiled ones from their container into another container and take the good ones from the other container into theirs. Or if all the berries are fine but the container is not filled to the top, they will take berries from another container and stuff into theirs, so there is no empty room. And then the salad bar... It is normal to want to try olives or pickled stuff, etc. from the salad bar before buying it but some people do more than try. They have themselves a mini meal. And they don't even use utensils to pick up the food. They use their hands, which are most likely dirty, and who knows what they've touched or where they've been. Have you witnessed people do that? And what other crazy things did you ever see someone do at a supermarket or grocery store?

I used to be a cashier at a grocery store and then I was a stock clerk. I hated when someone would let their child eat a banana or apple and then bring us another apple or banana to scan. Sure, fine,I understand that you intend to pay but the apple or banana you picked might weigh less than the one your kid actually ate. Plus, If it's just one banana we had to put that back and who is going to just buy one banana? it becomes a loss for the store. As a stock clerk it was finding things like cold meat in a dry aisle or a sample of food in with the trial size items. If you don't want something put it back where it belongs. If you can't do that then put ti back in a case with similar temperatures. You don't want to walk the extra ten feet to the meat case? Put it in the dairy case across from you. Don't put it on a dry end cap full of cereal. If you spill something, tell someone. Don't just walk away or don't just put a cone down. I guess this is more of a perspective from a former grocery store employee.

I would buy one banana. I usually do not buy a lot of them. i prefer to buy them and eat them. Don't like when they lie around for many days. Those other things you've mentioned, I have witnessed that as well. And I just remembered that recently I've seen a carton of smoked fish just lying around by the register next to the chocolate. If they chose not to buy it they should have returned it back to the place where they got it from instead of leaving it there to spoil.

@lovebuglena That annoyed me too. People putting things in the area around the register. I think once, when I was a cashier, I even caught someone doing it and smiled and said "Now wouldn't it make more sense to give that to me so that I could put it back before it spoils?" Maybe not in those words but somewhat similar. Getting one banana is fine, getting one banana so that your cashier can weigh it because you or your child ate the other? Not so good. Especially when you don't want the second banana and the cashier has to put it back. Anyway, that place was a soul sucker for six years. From cashier to stock clerk to hardly any hours for any of us. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole team there was different now.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If people don't want something why don't they put it back right away instead of having it in the cart the entire shopping trip and then just putting it anywhere before checking out?

I've seen mom's with very small children get containers of berries and let their toddlers eat them while they shop. I think anyone with small children should be wiser about that, not only is it bad manners but they could be risking their child's health considering other people could have handled those berries, the worst I can think of are the grapes.

That's what they do with those grapes @lovebuglena most of the time people just take a certain amount and put them in a bag then they are weighed at the register. I never buy grapes, I've seen too many parents let their kids run wild in the stores and of course some are going to eat those grapes .... too bad the store owners don't have videos set up so they can catch them and fine the parents for not keeping an eye on their kids.

@rebelann Why would parents let their kids eat dirty grapes?

I never eat berries from containers without washing them first. So it is strange that parents let their children eat the berries right out of the box. But good thing the containers are a fixed price. I can just imagine if berries were sold per weight and a child ate most of the berries in the container before getting to the register...

That's not right. I haven't seen many around where I do my groceries. But it will be an annoying sight.

Heh.The first thing I flashed on was people talking loud on their cell phones and treating the checker as if he or she were a non-entity. I check eggs too. If there's a broken one, I grab another box and let the checker know there's a broken egg issue "with the box I placed far to the left." Not that hard. The people who put their grocery carts right in the middle of an aisle irritate me mildly, but I just say, "On your right" in a friendly voice and all is well.

I haven't really seen people do these things, but I guess I don't pay that much attention to other shoppers there. I don't think people should be treating the produce section like their snack bar though.

Or any other department for that matter. First pay for it then eat it.

oh if you work at a grocery store.. there is so much that happens there that you do not want to know.. My roommate works there stocking shelves at night.. and they find containers of open food shoved behind things on the shelves.. there are people that pick up some hot food. like cooked -fried chicken. and eat it as they walk and then leave the remnants in an aisle hidden behind boxes or cans. . some people have actually changed their childrens diapers and left the used diaper on store shelves!

Changed diapers in the middle of the store? Not in the bathroom? And left the evidence on a store shelf? Now that is just disgusting.

That is bad to switch the bad egg or bad berry to another carton. I would never do something like that. I honestly am surprised some people do that. But, then there are some weird people out there.

I just leave that carton and check another one but I've seen enough people switch between cartons.

@lovebuglena I came across something at the grocery store today. I needed sand for my cat and I saw that someone opened one up and left the mess on the floor.

@lovebuglena Yes, they did and left the mess. People poke holes in the bags too. I try to find one that is still altogether and found one yesterday. I like to have one ready for when I finish the one I am working on.

I am always grossed out when people start tasting the food from the salad bar or touch all the bread and buns.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the bread. I use a plastic bag or those paper things (forgot the name) they offer when I want to pick one out. But some just use bare hands and touch many rolls or loafs of bread before they find "the perfect one".

@tzwrites I will sometimes lightly squeeze the bread to see if it's fresh but only using the plastic bag or those square paper things. Never with just my hands. But who knows how someone else handled that same bread before me.

I'm sorry but I wish no eggs will be able for buying, since the chickens are going trough massive suffering. Beside that, I also see sometimes wrong behaviors in the super marker relating to other things.

If you think that eggs should not be sold because chickens suffer then milk shouldn't be sold either because cows suffer.

Funny that you mention the whole checking and switching eggs. The other day while I was at work I seen a guy doing just that. I couldn't see what his point of doing that was and it was the first time I have ever seen someone do that. I have seen people taste the berries or the grapes before buying them. I have seen parents give their child a banana to eat while they shop. Which if they would think about it, it is shoplifting to do that. People just don't think about what they are doing. As I walk around the store while I am working, there are so many random things that people decide they don't want and just put them wherever they are instead of giving it to someone working there or in its proper place.

I think I have actually seen in my supermarket once not that long ago a small basket with some fruit in it for the kids to take. I think it was a banana and/or apple. But there was actually a sign there and it said the fruit is free for the kids to take.

@lovebuglena It is free but they still have to take it to the register for it to be "purchased." They have to have a card in order to get it free. There is a different free fruit each week. At least, at the one I work at.

@lovebuglena, good point. In the end it's all about education, I think. At home and at school, while you are still young, when you get older it's hard to change bad habits

There are people that try one grape before deciding whether it is worth it to buy it or not, especially when the price per pound is high. That's okay I think. But eating a lot of them is wrong.

I never thought about filling up the container! But once I was at walmart and they did not have but a few dozen eggs out, I needed some and each had busted eggs, so yes I made myself one without busted eggs, why would I buy busted eggs? The worst I have ever seen was people poking their fingers into the raw meat, or letting little kids do it, then I watched the meat guy take it over and just put another layer of plastic over it.

Nothing on that issue. I do my groceries not on peak hours like lunch or about 2pm. I don't see a lot of people during that time
