We blew a tyre yesterday

Our good luck did a bit of a nose-dive yesterday. Tomorrow (Monday) we have to catch the ferry from Devonport in Tasmania to sail back to Melbourne in Victoria. However we blew a tyre on the car quite late yesterday (Saturday) so there is no way to get it repaired before tomorrow which is the day we are due to catch the ferry. And we’re still about 100 miles from Devonport.
It took us quite a while to replace the tyre and it was a real struggle. We had to put a jack on the caravan to take the weight off the back of the car before Vince could hoist the car-wheel sufficiently off the ground to get the tyre off. Our car has different size tyres front and back and the spare is designed to fit either but only for short periods. So it’s pretty important that we get a new tyre before moving too far.
Vince will start ringing tyre companies early tomorrow and hope one has a tyre of the type we need. It isn’t a particularly common size but we’re in Launceston which is quite big so hopefully we’ll find the type we need. You can see the long shadows in the photo. We crawled into a caravan park in the dark and it’s a whole new ball-game trying to back into a restricted site and unhook etc when there isn’t much light around.
However it could have been raining and it wasn't so we were thankful for that at least.

I'm so sorry but at least you're in a good place to find a tire. I'm a little worried about my brother. He and his family are traveling out west and the area often has no cell phone signal. If they have trouble it might be difficult to find help.

this make me realize you really need to work as a team to be able to handle things like this. i didn't know some cars have different wheels. hope you find the tires and make it to the ferry in time.

@hereandthere Here is a photo of Vince doing up the nuts after on blow-out. We had two blow-outs on this trip but then we bought new tyres and had no more trouble.

One of the perils of a road trip. It would have really been bad has the tire blown while you were traveling that long empty road on the mainland.

That must have been very stressful for you and Vince.

@sunrisefan It is certainly something to take into consideration next time. It's very difficult to carry two spares so you have to have this 'hybrid' thing. It isn't the ideal situation.

@JudyEv Glad to know that all is well now, Ms. Judy.Maybe it would too if ever you change your car with a new one, that you buy a car having identical wheel sizes all around. I guess it's very cumbersome to have a car whose front and rear wheel sizes are not the same.

@JudyEv all the time (unfortunately re: men plan, God laughs). Are the roads good there? 100kms is nothing, right? (that is, with good roads, no traffic etc.) Let hope the garage people won't charge you too much for this, knowing that you have a deadline to meet. Make sure you two have a good rest now, so that you can face all the challengings ahead perfectly fine. Good luck. Do let us know how things are with you.
