Someone is feeding the squirrels

This year we have been over run - literally - by squirrels. They have built nests in the roof of our shed, They have buried oodles of peanuts in my planters and in the garden and stored them in crevices everywhere. My question is where did they get all the peanuts from? Someone in the neighbourhood is obviously feeding them and I would love to know who the culprit is. The problem is that the squirrels keep digging up my planters and garden looking for the buried peanuts. Every morning I find peanut shell strewn all over the yard. What a mess!

@Freelanzer That is not good at all. I hope you find out who is doing it. How are you going to find out?

I don't really think I can find out - just wishful thinking and not sure what I could do about it. I just hope the squirrels store their nuts where they got it from.

@Hannihar The thing is they store their nuts on the property so they will go to any lengths to retrieve it and they are quite sneaky creatures.

@Freelanzer Can you chase them away if they are bothering things?

They don't keep everything in one place, as in, a few kilo of peanuts in the same spot, dry and well packaging? Hmm... (That would be nice wouldn't it, having free peanuts?)

@Freelanzer You mean they only left the shells there for you?

Yes, some nut must be feeding them as peanuts do not grow in Canada. Squirrels can be terrible and troublesome pests.

They are the kind of pests you can't do anything about. Once we trapped one and let it loose in a park but not that easy to trap dozens of them.

I´d turn them into a squirrel casserole if they don´t behave.

@Freelanzer I tell Luna I will turn her into hotdogs when she is naughty. And I love her. Just imagine what I would do with an unknown squirrel (and fed with delicious nuts).

That is really a pet hate ! The squirrels have a natural instinct for storing some nuts ,but they never had thought if what they did would bother you.

@Freelanzer Yes,Squirrels can completely live on their own right. To multiply their population may upset the balance of ecology in a way.

It is where they choose to store the nuts that bothers me. I don't hate them I am upset with whoever is feeding them nuts. I have had squirrels around the yard for years. Squirrels can forage for themselves no need to multiply the population and cause a nuisance.

They have the habit of storing the seeds in the ground or in crevices, that is their natural instinct, so even if no body feeds them they will find some grains from here and there and they will bury them! So i don't think there won't be any point it finding out the person who is feeding them! Thanks!

That is really too bad. I never thought squirrels would do such a thing. We don't have squirrels here.

Lucky you. I really don't mind them too much but the population has grown over the past year and they have become a nuisance.

Squirrels can certainly be a problem when they are over-populated. We've only recently had squirrels move back into our neighborhood so I am thrilled to see them. A couple of yard cats should take care of your problem.

I don't mind them at all until this year and it is also the first year I no longer have my dog so they have free run of the yard.

The thing is they can take care of themselves and have been doing so until someone thought we needed more squirrels and started to feed them.

I feed mine, but they’re gray, not reddish the way yours are. I’m not exactly in your neighborhood, either.
