Throwbacking on a Thursday

I was on my way to the elevator, passing by my neighbor’s apartment when I was suddenly hit by the wonderful aroma of sautéed garlic and onions and more wafting in the air. I could have stayed longer and if I had the balls, could have knocked on his/her door for a self-invitation of a heaping bowl of rice and whatever’s cooking in the kitchen but nah. I took a deep sigh as the buttons on the elevator looked like fried chicken, dancing, blinking, taunting. Reminding me of my mom’s home cooked dishes and the many boisterous meals I shared with my six siblings as we feasted on whatever our parents could put on the table. Those days. How about you? Have scents/smells/aroma triggered your memory? Photo is from Google and who can remember those cassette tapes? hehe

@rakski Wow! That's awesome. Grandma must have had a full life cooking all those delish meals for her grandkids.

I like the aroma of an early morning brewed coffee as well as that of "oven fresh" bake bread. But if I'm going Filipino breakfast, nothing smells better than "sinangag" garlic-flavored stir-fried rice.

Scents, smells and aroma are the things well known to trigger our memory. Even the smell of the grass in the morning brings me back in time, when I used to spend the vacations at my granny's house. Beautiful times.

I remember the cassette tapes no worries. We never had garlic growing up so that is one smell that means nothing to me really although I do like it nowadays.

@JudyEv I didn’t know that. But in history class, I learned that Ferdinand Magellan set out on a journey to find the Spice Island. There must have been plenty of garlic bulbs in there.

@sol_cee Garlice wasn't used in the farming families of West Australia back in the 1950s and 60s. It probably only came into use in some kitchens when a lot of immigrants arrived from Mediterranean countries.

@Jessabuma I cook tinola here. My bf's mom had bell pepper planted in her garden. I was too excited so I asked for the leaves and they were shocked when I told them we eat the leaves and add as an ingredients. I prepared the tinola and steamed rice. They loved it.

I have just read the post of Kadase about just the aroma of coffee that makes her smile. And here you are, the aroma of foods. I am so into the aroma of foods. They make me hungry even if I haven's seen the dish itself or even if a while ago, I have just eaten

@sol_cee it has eggplants, bitter gourd, the fish paste, onion, ginger, tomatoes, okra, the "patani", and lots of fruit vegetables as well. my mother would put a little of oil and shake the pot (salta, as what we Ilocanos term it) but we don't mix the vegetables with the ladle.

I do! I still have some cassette tapes here somewhere. =) I love to cook and preparing our meal. So, I know how the smell like, haha... but, yes! There are certain smell that reminds me of my childhood and what I did that same time of day. I have a sharp memory. I can remember anything... the only thing my brain is not good at? Math! Ouch. I cower. =(

@sol_cee I know! I had this patient, she was 107. She would cry and cry. That breaks my heart. I would ask her why she was crying. This was her answer, "Why am I still here? All my loved ones, my parents, brothers and all relatives were all gone. But, why am I still here? I want to go now." I only had one answer, "Because I am going to meet you. We are going to meet you and it is a privilege to have met you." She responded, "Stop pulling my leg. You know I can barely walk!" Then we would end up laughing. Very witty and sharp for her age. I miss her everyday.
