Is chocolate really a mood-enhancer?

When I find myself in a sad or grumpy mood, I sometimes gobble up a piece of dark chocolate from Trader Joe's. I find that it actually does improve my mood most of the time. Is the chocolate/happiness link a myth, or does it exist simply because chocolate is a "comfort food," and high in sugar to boot? I did a little research and found that there really are physiological reasons for chocolate being a moon-enhancer. Here's what I found: chocolate increases the release of endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are our bodies' natural opiates, and reduce pain and the feeling of stress. Chocolate increases the release of serotonin, the same brain chemical increased by antidepressants like Prozac and Celexa. Chocolate increases the release of phenylethylamine, which acts as a mild, non-addictive, stimulant and focus-enhancer. So there you have it. If chocolate improves your mood, it's "all in your head," but it's not "all in your head," if you know what I mean. I also read somewhere about a chemical called anandamide, which is in chocolate and may bind with some of the same receptor sites in the brain as marijuana. But I'm going to research that one further. Happy chocolate eating! I'm going to go get some now, to go with my morning coffee.

I enjoy dark chocolate when I'm broken-hearted, in love, or in a Zen state. Heh.

Hi Colin. Yes, they do contain Endorphins. And they have sugar that gives us energy.

Do they contain endorphins? Or do they contain chemicals that lead our bodies to produce more endorphins? I often wonder that about foods that "enhance" the production of melatonin, endorphins, etc.

@TheHorse Colin! Apologies, I misunderstood. I do not really give much thought on those chemicals as long as I eat them and they are yummy for me.

I tend to over analyze things - but with this one I try not to analyze. Just enjoy the heck out of tasting that morsel of chocolate - and gimme some !

Maybe it depends on the person and their need for magnesium and how much magnesium their favorite chocolate has?

@TheHorse Quality chocolate contains some. Of course there are products with the word chocolate on the label that are not the real thing too.

@mlgen1037 Is right, dark chocolate does not contain endorphins, but it increases the levels of endorphins released into the brain. Endorphins are well known to decrease levels of stress but also pain.

Do you know why dark is better than light? I'm still trying to figure that out.

It definitely lifts my mood. I eat chocolate to celebrate, to bond with my daughters sharing our chocolates and definitely when I am feeling low.
