We Met A Cousin for the First Time

A day after my next sister arrived from Manila for a one week visit to our mother last July1 , we fetched from the airport , a cousin from Davao When he arrived, he wants to make a video of my mother giving a greeting , not knowing that she can’t speak yet. It was the wish of his father, my mother’s only living sibling . He cannot travel anymore because of his diabetes so they sent his son to visit. That evening we prepared foods that are of Bicol origin. He loves the boiled pili with a dipping of fish sauce with chops of Thai Chili, especially. We toured him around the beautiful sights here in our province. We bought different types of pilinuts as our token for her parents and siblings. We went to a restaurant that serves Bicol Express , meat with chopped chilis and coconut milk. We ordered him sili (spicy chili) ice cream that originated here. He tried level 1. He loves the spicy foods. He only stayed overnight and the next day after touring him around, he flew back to Manila then to Davao. That’s how we are with all our cousins. We don’t always see each other but once we meet, we are close to one another. Are you close to your cousins? Are you in touch with any of them?

I'm sure your mother was very happy seeing even only your cousin in behalf of his father.

@SIMPLYD Good thing your mother still recognized your cousin. Do I remember right that your mother has some memory lapses at times?

Actually, I am also closer to my father's side cousins. That's because they are always here on summers while growing up. With those on mother side, I am only on FB with some that I personally know. But with this cousin, I am now at FB with him.

On both sides? I suppose they are all far from where you are? Yes, I am happy that from both sides we are in accord with all my cousins. Except for one brother of my late father who is a shrewd and selfish person. All of us relatives hates him.

@SIMPLYD My father wasn't one to associate with anyone of his family outside my aunt, his sister. So, I never knew my cousins or aunts from that side, not until recently when I started meeting them, at least online, and only that through a cousin I met at a fitness center a few years ago. That chance meeting led me to my father's side of the family. My grandfather had 10 brothers and sisters. I don't know about my grandmother, but I'm sure her family was large as well, and prominent. They own a construction company here. Though, I don't know any of them. It was only on my mother's side I knew any of my cousins. My mother has four brothers and sisters. She was the middle of five.

That is good to know that you are also close to cousins. Especially when you grew up with your cousins but become far from each other because of new endeavors in life, but still the closeness is there whenever you have the chance to have a get-together.

That's nice to know. I think that is understandable to our cousins because we are of the same blood. He ate the sili or spicy ice cream and only the level 1. He said it's mildly spicy and liked it.

Seems like you toured him around your place. I am familiar with most the the pictures you posted. I hope your cousin did enjoy his stay there and he got what he wanted from your mom. I am pretty sure its really hard when growing old and you seem to be separated with your other siblings and you cannot visit them anymore because of distance and your health situation.

It is so far. We don't have a flight here directly to Davao. One would need to take a flight either to Manila or Cebu in order to take them to Davao.

@changjiangzhibin89 Yes. It is expensive to travel by plane and it's the only way to be able to come here in a short time. Travel time from Manila to here is only 45 minutes. While if you take the airconditioned bus it will take 10 hours.

we have cousins near our home but we are not very close to them. it is because they have changed their religious affiliation except one who maintained her Roman Catholicism.

O, that's sad , that because of religious affiliations you aren't close to one another. How come it became a factor in the relationships between cousins? It should not affect the relationship.

@ridingbet Do you know that our sister next to me is a Born Again Christian and the rest of us are Roman Catholics. But we remained close to one another. But I suppose it would be irritating if one will "proclaim their faith and belief". If that is done to me, I would tell them, "please respect my faith and belief so yours will, too. "

@SIMPLYD my cousin remained a Roman catholic while the rest of her family are already Born-Again. when we meet, my cousins start to 'proclaim their faith and belief' to us. we are devout RC's, and we believe in Mama Mary, which the other cousins don't. that is why we some-sort-of drifted apart.

@SIMPLYD So, you never met him before this? Wow, that is very nice. I found out I had distant relatives on my father's side when I moved to Israel and since my Hebrew was very poor I could not talk to them but we communicated some how and it was nice. Now, that I can speak to them I do not know what happened to them.

Yes, I have never ever seen him, because when we are having vacation there at my mother's parents which is a very far province, his father was still single. So, when we settled here in a much further province and wasn't able to take a vacation there anymore, we weren't able to meet his wife and their children, although my mother and youngest sister has seen them when they went there to visit.

Well, that's understandable, when relatives are far from us. At least some have grown up with you when you were kids. That's good that your kids are close to their cousins. I suppose that's because your brothers and sisters live near you.
