Danger Tree Cutters

I could hear tree cutters not far from our apartment, at least I assumed it was, the chain saw sounded loud and close. I walked down the back stairs to the trail below and followed the sound. What I saw scared the heck out of me. A man was in the top of a huge tree using a chain saw to cut the tree down in pieces. The chain saw had a rope or chain, I couldn't tell which tied to it. He would drop the chain saw with it still running down below his legs then he would swing it back into his hand by the rope. He could so easily have cut his arm or leg off, he could have sliced himself in half. I only watched for a minute or two. I was so fearful for him. It was already after sun down and he continued to cut until dark. These tree cutters are dare devils, that's all I can say for them. I wish them all luck and a long life without crippling themselves. I certainly don't want to watch them.

Chain saws have safety devices built into them to help prevent injury. In the case of this tree-cutter, as soon as you take your finger off the trigger, the chain stops moving, even though the chainsaw is still running. That's how he was able to drop the chainsaw and not worry about it cutting his leg off. I will admit though, those tree-cutters that climb way up to the tops of trees to start sawing them off piece by piece are crazy dudes!

@RubyHawk Their biggest risk of injury is falling out of the tree. It happens all the time! lol

@RubyHawk Just consider yourself lucky that you weren't around a couple of years ago when I fell out of a tree and broke my ribs! It was not a very fun experience! haha

@moffittjc I don't want to see anyone fall out of a tree either, so I think I'll stay away when they are cutting trees.

I hope that people like that doesn't get hurt. In my eyes it is foolish to do things like this. There should be a law to stop this kind of stupid acts.

@RubyHawk That is good to know. I feel like Jeff does about them going to the top to cut branches. They are mighty brave or crazy to do that.

That’s what I thought until Jeff Moffit explained. Look on down and read his explanation.

@velvet53 I like to keep my feet on the ground. I don't even want to stand on the edge of a cliff.

Oh I think they know what they are doing at all. So you live near a forest? Are they cutting the whole tree trunk or just cut the branches like they are trimming the trees? I have seen one in my place and they do not cut the whole tree, just the branches that may endanger its surroundings when strong rains and wind comes.

@RubyHawk I guess they only cut those trees that could potentially harm public property but if it’s private they would not budge unless you request it to be trimmed

Several large trees were cut in our complex after we had storms and some were blown down. I think they were cut down to prevent any more damage. But I loved our shade trees. Actually we still have large shade trees just not as many. My deck looks out on an area of trees and I love looking out at them. None of them were cut.

@rsa101 If it were private property you would pay dearly to have your trees cut. It's very expensive.

When I have someone cut my trees they use a bucket truck and the man with the saw is on the bucket and the saw is never swinging around anywhere.

@RubyHawk The man who does my trees does it for a reasonable price but I feel much safer seeing his men in the bucket.

@BelleStarr Both scare me. My nephew was in a bucket and was pushed into a power line. He was in the hospital for months and he will never be able to work again. It's a dangerous job.

They do that here, especially along the highways, but some do it the way I described. It was on the complex property so I suppose it was a smaller crew that didn't charge as much.

Wow, thats crazy, why would he risk that. Was there anyone else working with him or was he working alone? I don't blame you, I wouldn't want to watch him either.

@cintol I would think it takes a certain kind of daredevil to take on the job of tree cutter.

Yes, he was a professional or he wouldn’t have been on the job. He knew what he was doing. But accidents can happen.

I am sure the protocol is for him to turn off the chainsaw. I imagine it's hard to manuever to turn the chain saw off and on. He is a fool and I do hope he won't injure himself.

It’s amazing to watch them. He probably would never get the job done if he cut off the chain saw, but it looks so dangerous.

That's the way they do it here. I see the same thing at the parks. How do they do it where you live. When they are up in the tree and need to take a hand off the saw. How do they hold it '

Yes, I’m sure he was well trained. He had every movement down pat. And it wasn’t only one. Several were working and flipping the saw around the same way.

yes! They knew what they were doing but can you imagine jerking a running chain saw up toward you and grabbing the handle in your hand?
