Burger King French Toast

United States

As I said in my last post, I had gone to Wal Mart to get my prescription filled and pick up a few things. One of the items I needed was a 40 pound bag of cracked corn for feeding my deer. I was able to struggle the bag to the bottom of my cart but I can't lift it from the bottom of the cart into the trunk of the car. So I ask for one of the strong men who stock and retrieve shopping carts to help me put the corn in the car. I always slip a dollar in their pocket...their NOT allowed to take tips, so as I tell them they didn't "take" it, I gave it to them. The man that helped me yesterday was so cute. I pushed the cart and he followed along and we chatted about everything possible. Suddenly he grabbed the cart and stopped it. The corn bag had slipped some. We got to the car (we have to park in the handicapped area because both Bill and I have bad legs and can't walk that far) and the young man hefted the bag of corn into the trunk with a smile. I slipped the dollar in his pocket and he got excited...I can have Burger King French Toast? I looked him in the eye and told him he could get anything he wanted with his dollar. He was so excited he decided to put the rest of my order in the trunk. I had purchased 7 bags of bread and a few smaller items that were bagged. That young man proceeded to put each loaf of bread very carefully into the trunk for me, so I reached in my pocket and got out another dollar for him....it was so hot and I was feeling soooo guilty because he needed a cool drink to go with the French toast. I slipped that dollar in his pocket and he lit up like a thousand watt bulb "OH BOY! MORE FRENCH TOAST!!!" My purse was in the top part of the cart and he insisted on wheeling it over to my side of the car and he opened the door for me and waited for me to get seated and then he handed me my purse and prescription bag. He virtually skipped around to collect the carts to take into the store. I may have made his day a ton, but his reaction made my day even more! Think about it when it's hot outside and the cart guy is out there collecting carts. Wheeling fifteen or twenty of those things to the store isn't an easy job and it sure isn't cool. If you can spare it, slip them a buck for a cold drink...it will change their expression really quickly, and the temperature of your heart even faster!

I honestly think his reaction brightened mine more. If I could have given him more...it is so worth seeing the joy on that man's face.

I love being able to do it. I'm on disability income and so it's a case of stashing the couple of bucks in my wallet so I have it for the stockman when he comes to help. Then getting the smile when I tell them to get a cold drink makes the whole day.

The way those people work...I worked in a similar place many years ago. I can speak from experience that they use you up and then toss you aside. I ended up suing them for disability because they destroyed my right arm, neck and back along with my right leg. Just from one on the job accident. If you stop and watch in Wal Mart they're constantly go go go, do do do. I only see the people in the pharmacy and photo stand still occasionally. That's from helping with the prescriptions and developing film. I know when I finally left the similar job I weighed around 115 and my normal weight is around 140. What you ate was used up before you finished the meal!

@BearArtistLady You are lucky in the United States, because here in Europe we do not have this service. Even very old people has to put their carts back. I am not young, but sometimes I help if the cart station is not too far.

I usually try to put the carts back, but one of the major problems I have is that my legs are bad from having worked on a cement floor for my working life. It's like working on rock and unless you can afford the proper foot covering you're going to have leg problems later on. I'm going to show my age and state I remember when there was people to help you out with your groceries...as a matter of course! They would bring the cart back for you. I remember that from when my Mom went grocery shopping.

Wal Mart policy is that their people are NOT to accept tips. I think that stinks so I just go around the policy by slipping the money in their pocket. Other people never think to go around the policy that way.

He was very nice. He even wanted to push the cart to the car! He won't make it to checker, but he was such a sweetheart. I make it a habit of tipping the guys that load my bag of corn into the car. It's too heavy for me to lift from under the cart up the 3 feet into the trunk and it is so nice to have a man that can. Wal Mart doesn't allow them to "accept" tips, so I just slip it in their pocket without their touching it. That way they don't get accused of accepting it.

It's humid right here in Miami. Gosh the humidity but there is the pouring of the rain so therefore perhaps there will be a cool down.

I love seeing the smile on their faces when they realize that it is a buck or two. They smile ear to ear and there is a little bounce in their step. It makes the day for me just to see the little smile.
