How often does a car need its oil changed?

Mechanics recommend changing a car's oil every 3,000 miles. I'm sure they'd love it if we changed our oil every 1,000 miles, since that would mean more money for them. How often do we REALLY need to change the oil?

Normally I change once in 4 months (1000 to 1200 km) and on the dashboard indicator the oil level indictor with glow sign is self explanatory. Since I give the car for service once in 4 months, oil change is done at the service station.

I usually get it changed between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. It slipped to 7,000 once but I didn't have any problems.

I think it is best to follow the manufacturer's specifications. It should be checked periodically and it should be regulated properly.

We have three vehicles that we use. 1) 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E, 4 cylinder. The owners manual recommends oil changes every 7500 miles. I do all my own maintenance. I use Castrol 10W40 year round, and have had no problems with this car. This car has 150,000 miles on it. 2) 1989 GMC Conversion Van 3/4 ton with 350 Engine. The owners manual recommends 3000 miles between oil changes. I use Castrol 10W30 year round and have had no problems with this Van. This van has 170,000 miles on it. 3) 1991 Mercury Capri Convertible with a 4Cylinder engine. The owners manual recommends 3000 miles between oil changes. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic lubricant 5W30 in the winter and 10W30 in the summer. I change the oil filter every 3000 to 4000 miles, and I change the filter and lubricant every 6000 to 7000 miles, and have had no problems with this car. This car has 139,000 miles on it. To sum this discussion up, I believe you should READ AND BELIEVE what your owners manual recommends, unless you know better than the manufacturer.

I change my engine oil every 5000 kilometers together with the oil filter. I believe if we maintain our car by doing this,it will long last.

Yes 3,000 miles is the right distance for an oil change. If you still doubftul refer to you car manual to confirm. If you are taking this light then you have to pay for it later.

In fact that greatly depend on your car conditions......if it was new I will suggest to change itaround 6ooo to 7000KM( Not Miles) if you use some good formulated type it sould work just fine within 8000 to 12000Km. If its an ole car then 5000km should be fine.

Always check your manual, I can't remember what my own says, although usually when I clock up a good enough amount of miles.

3,000 miles is when we change ours. But we are driving a 2006 Subaru Forester so it is even more important for us.

I always use the manufacturer's recommendation for oil changing. I've owned six cars and each one has lasted 15 years or more, at least 150,000 miles and were still going when I sold them! I now have a 16 year old Toyota truck, a 20 year old Isuzu "jeep" and a 5 year old Toyota truck. They all run and never need repairs! Change your oil!
