What matters is now, not the glorious past or the future

I have heard people asserting with an air of superiority about their glorious past when it comes to their culture, belief or society. They even talk of a future that will be even better and glorious. However, I look at the present; who they are now, to get a better idea of where they are from and where they are headed for. What matters is the present, how they carry themselves, and the ideals they live by. If they are less than honorable, the past and future are mere pretenders to hoodwink not only others but themselves too. How we behave is all that matters to others. Walk the talk is the best path and not living in false glory. How we carry ourselves is a dead giveaway to who we really are. What are the ideals we live by; are they to live and let others live, treat others as we want to be treated? Let us shun hypocrisy and find unity in diversity. Others are just like us with similar feelings, hopes, and despair. Don’t you think the basics are overlooked at every level of human interaction? Image: Now from Pixabay

I think that it's important that we learn from the past, enjoy and make the most from the present and hope the future will be better.

Yes, that is the logical way. However, we find some asserting how wonderful the past was, and how glorious the future will be, but living a life that is totally contrary to such hopes and beliefs. The present state of affairs of the world reflects an outlook and lifestyle of strife, animosity, and distrust. Also the opposite of "live, and let others live" - siva

@Shiva49 Maybe the past was glorious as we were sheltered and did not know about all the ugliness taking place in the world?

@1hopefulman I feel the past had its own successes and failures, the good and the bad obviously. We should learn from the mistakes as history is the best guide for better behavior but we are selective in recalling them especially those from where we can learn from our mistakes. Yes, the faultlines and ills of society are more under the scanner now. No one has all the wisdom and modern technology should help us to find a common path of unity in diversity - siva

For me the past achievements they act as motivation for future achievements and for that I do whatever I can in the present time! Thanks for a thought provoking post! Thanks!

Yes @Shiva49 , they say that actions speak louder than words. How we treat others now will lead to how we are treated in the future. The past is gone, the future is a mystery to all of us, we should try to be the best we can be now.

@Shiva49 I agree, here in my country the present is very unstable and it is hard times for most, they keep blaming the past, which was bad, but they have had time to try to fix what was done wrong, they make lots of promises for the future, but there is so much hate speech that the future looks dark.

I hear some leaders talk about the glorious past, the even more glorious future, but the present is the pits. How can the future be glorious when we sow seeds of division and hatred? siva

@bluesa Sadly, that happens in a democracy too. It is endless blame games with the common folks, the law-abiding citizens, getting played out - siva

Of course, we should live by example, and adhere to such tenets like : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. However I feel it is necessary to be aware of our past and plan for the future.

I agree, but what I highlight is the hypocrisy that is rampant; saying one thing and doing another - siva

@Kandae11 Yes, children get confused by the hypocrisy in the adult world but soon learn the ropes to survive and the malady in society continues from one generation to another! siva

Our past success should be motivation for us and also what we learned from past experience.

I recall the quote “We are products of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it.” Let us step out of the prison of negativity and bigotry - siva

The present moment is the best present we get. Past is behind us, the future is unknown, what we have is only the present When we learn from our past and do what is needed now, the future will take care of itself - siva

It's not a good idea to live in the past, however that past has shaped us into who we are today.

Living in the NOW is what counts, to put it simply. However, the past is who we are and we must do well to plan for the future.

Yes, that is what we should do. However, I have found those who talk of their glorious past and even more glorious future while their behavior is the pits. Th present should reflect who they are and who they will be, sort of action is louder than words - siva

Well put. I do live for today, looking towards the future, which is after all, only a breath away, as time continually slips into the past.

The sands of time can bury you, if you hang onto the past too much, and do not keep time with the present.
Basic human life is about growing in the arms of God's love. Love develops values worthy to be in you from this love, and espouses all other sinful desires, thoughts, traits of your own, out from you. The enigma of life is that to love, you must love God, and your fellow man too, and this means always that hypocrisy, and its attached attitudes must be replaced by love, and its blessingness of all others. @Shiva49 What causes love to be suppressed then? Simply put, it's a mind that concentrates on its own wants, and so bypasses the "needs" of love, but which really, paraoxically, are none, because love just gives. This means that whenever we just want, (for ourselves, or wanting anything at all, with our minds, via greed) we are suppressing this love then.

@Shiva49 That's well-stated siva. Teamwork is important, and to be a team player. Teamwork is an element of connective love working, but it depends also on each link of the chain to be itself, and to stay strong to itself too. The team players make up the team.

Yes, Steve, we should be flexible without losing our basics, moorings, in the all pervasive love of creation. When we step out of love and sing a different tune it is jarring to the ears of those who are within earshot. I think of few within my range who sing the tune too loudly about their most glorious past and the even more glorious future but I implore them, please change their course right now to the path of love and inclusion. They are enslaved to the misplaced notion of freedom and democracy and find it too enticing to step out, but how then to realize their hopes and dreams of utopia? I think that is what ails our world. Our leaders sing different tunes to spite each other, as love is suppressed deep inside their hearts - siva
