The Beach is the Only Comfortable Spot in So Cal

Nearly every morning, I walk for at least an hour with a friend. Sometimes we walk at the beach and sometimes we walk in the local parks, the Laguna Wilderness area or around the perimeter of the golf course. For the past week, however, we have either gone to the beach or we have gone to the gym to use the treadmills, exercise bikes and other equipment. The beach is now the only comfortable outdoor spot in Southern California. We're trying to spend as much time walking along the edge of the water as possible. What do you do for exercise when it gets hot in your area?

We walk in the morning, along the trails in the woods and it's never too hot there.

@DeborahDiane We did very early this morning. It rained during the night, the air is cool and the sky clear now.

@LadyDuck - I love the way the air smells right after it rains. It seems so fresh and clean!

@LadyDuck - Walking along a trail in Switzerland sounds heavenly. We did that around Zermatt when our daughter was in school there, and it was wonderful!

Love your picture, walking on the sand is so nice, I go to the pool to swim. it's a lifesaver when it's too hot to walk. Sometimes I go to the workout room but the treadmill is so boring and I love the water.

@RubyHawk - I agree the treadmill gets boring. I prefer to be outside. When I cannot, then I will ride the exercise bike and listen to a book on my phone from the Audible app. It's not as good as being outside, but I just cannot stand to be outside in this heat, unless I am at the beach.

@RubyHawk - Our swimming pools are in the sun, too, so when we go to the pool, we try to go late in the day. It is the only time to be safe from sunburn and comfortable.

@DeborahDiane Our pools are outdoors and the sun can get hot so to prevent sunburn I usually go swimming about sundown. If we had shade I would love to go earlier, but sundown is okay.

This week was hot, so the kids and I hit up 4 different aquatic centers throughout the week! Ugh, and this week is supposed to be way hotter. We have been hitting up at least one beach on the weekends too. Our trip to Monterey was wonderful - overcast and foggy (cold) there most of the day at the beach, just the way I love it!!

@DeborahDiane I have a feeling that the hot weather is only going to get hotter in coming years - I agree with you that up north places are going to be the "happening" places to go in the summer and into the late summer. It's supposed to be getting cooler, but I don't know . . . it's been consistently hot - how about where you are?

@much2say - This was the hottest July ever in California. It is very hot is Southern California and August is off to an unseasonably hot start. We have also had some very bad drought years. In the past 12 months, we have had less than 5 inches of rain. These things are not good.

@much2say - I'm glad it was cool in Monterey. I think cool places like the mountains and northern beaches are going to be popular in the future, if we keep having such hot weather! Keep staying cool!

I am sure you and your friend enjoy walking on the beach, DD. i'm glad you have somewhere nice to get your exercise. Do you ever pick up shells (or other interesting things) while you're walking? Have you written a post about interesting things you see while getting your exercise?

@DeborahDiane I need to sort back through your discussions when I catch up with my notifications. I guess I miss too many of them... either because I didn't see you'd posted something or because my notifications list just gets too darn long for me to go exploring to see everything people write about. *shake my head* Pretty and I have a shoe box full of shells we picked up when we went to the beach at Shaw's Cove. We also found a diver's watch that was still working when we were wandering the beach. It's band had broken and it had washed up on the beach with some kind of seaweed. When we got home I put the shoe box in our garage. A few weeks later I heard an alarm going off. It took me several days to realize the watch had an alarm set and I was hearing it go off. The watch was so corroded that I couldn't shut the alarm off again! I heard that alarm going off at 11 am for almost a year after we had found the watch. If I had been on the beach when bubbles float by I'd have been chasing them, too!

@DaddyEvil - I totally understand the issue with notifications. They get to be overwhelming, especially reading every post our connections write. I'm getting ready to leave on a trip, so I am having a little trouble keeping up right now, too. We are going to be gone until the end of August. I will try to catch up with people then.

@DaddyEvil - I do post occasionally about interesting things I see in Laguna Beach. It is an artist's colony, so there is a great deal of street art. I posted a picture of a public bench in front of the library the other day. I used to pick up seashells all the time. However, you can only hold onto so many seashells! LOL I have also posted about a man building an amazing sand castle, another man who stacks rocks in interesting designs and photographs them, etc. I often write about my beach experiences! I added here a photo of children chasing bubbles at the beach.

When it gets too hot, I need to get out because inside is too unbearable. I usually go to my favorite park.

@just4him - Wow! Of course, you live in Wisconsin, so it is probably cooler there in the summer than it is in Southern California. i don't think I could survive here without A/C. Good for you, though!

@DeborahDiane I don't like A/C very much, and only turn it on when absolutely necessary. Walking in a mall would be way too cold for me.

@Hannihar - I think it is good you have an exercise routine, too. The woman I walk with is the grandmother of the Orthodox Jewish young woman I told you about. She is visiting her grandmother right now. They were cooking for a Chabad or Chabat dinner today. (I may have spelled that wrong.)

@Hannihar - She seems to be enjoying spending time with her grandmother and grandfather. She has inspired my friend to go to Temple more and, of course, my friend has been cooking Kosher. She loves to cook, and she is very happy having her granddaughter stay with her for a couple of weeks.

I have been finding it too hot for cycling. On Tuesday I did lots of walking at a hilly zoo with my two children. I stay at home while the weather is this hot. I would like to go out food shopping later on. I will wait until it gets cooler.

@maximax8 - I try to stay in a lot when it is this hot. This morning, I went to the gym and rode a stationary bike. It was just too hot to do anything outside.

I have a habit of taking a bike ride after the sun goes down in the summer. In the winter, I ride home from work at 5:00 and it's after the sun goes down-- but not by my choice!

Nice to meet you, Deborah, I respect you for doing routine of exercise, I'm sure you have fun doing it. We have good sea shores in Israel, I like dancing Israeli Folk Dances there. Honestly, I don't do exercise, I want to do that and I can find time for that. I can go to the local park we have not far away from my home, I can exercise there on the machines, lift myself up, work my legs and etc...I just need some motivation, because I have less fun when sweating :-|

I live in South Jakarta, Indonesia. The area south of Jakarta is still a lot of trees and the air is still quite fresh than other areas of Jakarta. So walking in the morning is still very refreshing and fun to do

I am not close to the ocean so I go to the air-conditioned Aeon Mall that is now in my area and I walk. I can walk two or three km easily. They encourage this and have "Mall Walking" signs on the floor if you want to walk their 700-meter course. They also have a one-kilometer course around the outside, which is edged in greenery. But it is too hot right now to do that one.

@JohnRoberts - That is the perfect time to go walking. Lately, it has been nicer in the early morning than it is after dark. Can you believe all the smoke we are getting from the Idyllwild fire? The entire LA basin seems to be covered in smoke!
