Making Plans on a Cloudy Day

It took 50 tries to capture this gull in a photograph.

The rain we were expecting finally began falling late this afternoon. It came down hard with plenty of thunder and lightning. Now, there is not so much thunder but it is still raining. Today did turn out to be a good day for writing a Social Studies Pacing Guide. I'd already finished 2 others this summer: Math and Science. Today, I also started on my Guide for Language Arts. In the public school I never had to write my own Pacing Guide. The state promulgated the curriculum, the district wrote the Pacing Guide, and teachers wrote the lesson plans. In private school we don't have quite that depth of support. On top of that, the person I replaced left no guide or plans for me to use as a starting point. Let's just say I had to start from scratch last year and that was time consuming. On the plus side, I knew just where I wanted to go in writing the Pacing Guides. As far as lesson plans, I just need to adjust and update last year's and I'll be ready to go. The photo is another I took at the beach in April. It is also on Pixabay.

Yes, I teach Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. With the 4 parts to Language Arts, that makes seven subjects in all.

@NJChicaa I have just the one group of kids, 4+h Graders, and I teach them all the core subjects. It's a Catholic School, so I make even less than State Scale. But I knew I would take a hit in the wallet when I left public schools. I had many other reasons for making the move.

@DWDavis all in one class? Or different classes? That is an INSANE amount of work/prep. I hope you are making bank. From what my in-laws tell me about NC, teachers are paid crap there.

I miss North Carolina, good blend of people. Perfect I would say, some conservative, some liberal, some black some white. Some good, some bad. It was all the right balance. Its a pretty neat state and how can you not love the bay at Camp Lejeune and all those trees. Weather was pretty balanced also. Rained more than here but not to often to where you get annoyed. Snowed just enough to make you appreciate. Saw a gator and he was just saying hi and I am messing with you and I said, well, not messing with you. Be on with your bad self.

@DWDavis Indeed and was so mad at My Master Sergeant for sending me there. He had the option to switch me with another guy from Florida, and I go that is not fair he will like it and I will not. To bad I got drunk with him one night at a local bar in Japan and told and gave away everything. He was all about teaching and bet that is why he did not send me back to my home state. Is it possible to hate someone and love them at the same time? He was clearly right and also so wrong.

@crossbones27 I knew a few NCOs I loved to hate and a few I'd follow into hell, but there was this one Staff Sergeant who just got on everyone's nerves and we hated the guy until someone from another unit tried to screw with us and Tony went after him like a pitbull protecting her pups. I never really liked him, but I respected him a lot more after that.

I do love my state. We have something for everyone from the ocean shore to our "relatively" small mountains. We have metro and rural, farm and factory, hi- tech and kicked back.

@wolfgirl569 I will have plenty of help. My co-workers are bound and determined I not strain myself only 8 weeks post-surgery.

Thankfully, I was able to get in everything I wanted to do today before our afternoon thunderstorms hit us. We've had some particularly nasty and long-lasting storms this summer, and we are well above average for rainfall for the year. I love rain and all, but man we are just getting so much of it!

@moffittjc According to Genesis, Noah's Ark was made of gopher wood. It is the only reference to gopher wood found anywhere and no one really knows what kind of tree it was from. Even the word in Hebrew has no real meaning related to trees or wood.

Is your part of Washington closer to the east side of the state? I was at Ft Lewis a long-time ago and it was always wet on the west side of Mt Ranier.

@sallypup Being dry west of the Cascades isn't a good thing. We had about 20 days without rain the first July I spent there and all the plants turned brown, trees, grass, bushes.

@DWDavis Yes I live on the east side of the Cascades. Ft. Lewis is by Tacoma and Seattle. Times are changing. Apparently its a lot dryer on that west side than it was when I lived there eons ago.

There is always plenty of work when you are teaching. I am glad you took advantage of a rainy day to do some of your work. It keeps threatening to rain here, but we have not seen it yet.
