Can you give me a good answer to the question: "If trees are the lungs of planet Earth, then WHY are WE cutting them all down with such abandon?" How many trees were on the planet in the year 1957? I have no way of knowing. 1957 was the year of Sputnik. There had to be many many more trees on planet Earth back in the year 1957. What was the population of Earth back then? according to the population pyramid it was approx. 2,857,662,910 How many trees are still in existence now - Thursday, August 2nd, 2018? I come up empty but there is a link to an article written in 2017 about it. A little over 3 billion on planet Earth. https://greenfuture.io/nature/how-many-trees-are-in-the-world/ National Geographic has an article I think is worth a look at and certainly a hot topic of debate. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/deforestation/ The best thing you and I can do and do starting yesterday ... is to PLANT AS MANY TREES AS YOU CAN where possible and where practical. It would be a start to making Earth able to breath freely once again. Plant a tree, save the Earth. Plant a tree, provide shade for you and me. Plant a tree and give the birds a place to nest. Plant a tree with fruit so you can get something to eat. Plant a tree until you have many, grow them high to the sky. Watch as nature builds all around them, a habitat for life for you and me. More facts to look at. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9RlqNKmP-A

If I had anything to do with it, I would plant a row of trees on the center median of our street. But the city did just that and a week later, a man with a pick up dug them up and stole them.

@Courage7 , Well if we planted trees like these, they might eventually get a good start.
Home > Urban/suburban design > Street tree design > Street or highway medians Trees in strips of soil between opposing lands of multilane boulevards (highway medians) should be chosen according to the width of the median. Trees that have a mature size cons

I love Mother Nature and it needs looking after. It is awful people are cutting down trees in the world. I have seen palm oil listed on some ingredients. I wish to find out how to stop people cutting down trees because it harms our environment.

It sounds like the title of a disaster movie, but a "Hothouse Earth" is what a group of climate scientists say we could be heading for - even if current carb...

We are overpopulated on this planet. People want to make their homes and cities - and people want to make their money even if it means cutting down all the trees. I saw this documentary about the rainforests being cut down. A tree cutter was asked if he cared at all what he's doing to the planet - and he said he didn't care about the future . . . his immediate need was to make money for his family now. He said he would be long gone before future generations - he didn't care about them .

@lookatdesktop I know - it's a completely selfish way of thinking!

@much2say , I would like to have people plant trees that are condusive to the natural habitat that would in some way bring back the original species, flora and fauna. It has been done on so many levels that I know it is doable, if only.

@lookatdesktop I know there have been places/countries that have made it a point to plant more trees and it's changed their environment for the better - yes, it's very doable! Here, there are organizations that try to educate the public about native plants and encourage that sort of landscaping - but yes, if only more people would catch on.

There is many things that can be made from hemp that is made from trees. Paper being one of them. If we just switched to growing hemp many of the trees would not need cut down at all. But the government has it outlawed to grow

@lookatdesktop Ohio is supposed to have recreational use onthe ballet this spring. I hope it passes. But the useful hemp plant does not even contain the thc which is what gets you high. What I have read it was banned also just because it is in the same family. By that logic tomatoes should be banned also. They too are in the same family of plants.

@wolfgirl569 , That is true and that is another good reason to legalize it. People on the other hand, one way or the other, will get it even at a high risk.

I like the way it looks and it should be legalized. I don't smoke the wacky tabacky. The mary jane plants used to actually be legal. I mean, why not just legalize the stuff and let people grow their own to smoke or to make paper with it. right? Maybe?

It's very concerning issue. When we cut trees for our use, it's our duty to plant a new one. Trees give us a lot in the name of food, paper, shelter, gum, latex, rubber, herbs.. A lot of things. It also regulates oxygen supply and water cycle. If every person grow one new plant every month, it can be wonders to the earth

@lookatdesktop There are certain days dedicated to plantations. Here in India, we have a whole week called forest day when numerous plants are planted by NGOs and Government organization. But very less people are aware of it. I think awareness also play important role when it comes to the involvement of masses

That's a good question. People need wood, but they are too greedy.

We have enough plastic. We could make everything and houses and furniture, included, our of plastic so it will never rot, and you can even save a tree or two as a result.
