National Lighthouse Day

I didn't realize this day existed and I am glad it does because I have an absolute fascination in Lighthouses. My husband and kids (when they were little) visited Ponce Inlet Light House in Florida. It is near New Smyrna Beach. It was so pretty to climb all the way up and see ocean views from the top. I would like to visit more Lighthouses in the future. Because my sister knows my liking for them, on one of my birthday's she gave me a tea/coffee pot that is shaped like a Lighthouse. It was a sweet gift. I learned online the reason this date of August 7th celebrates Lighthouses, is because this was the date back in 1789 that the US Bureau of Lighthouses was created. The 9th act of the first Congress created it. By doing it, it placed Lighthouses under Federal Control.

One of my favorite lighthouses is the one in the picture below, it's The Maiden's Tower in Istanbul (Turkey), it was built in 1110.

I love lighthouses, too. We have so many here in New England. One I know is a hotel.

That is very interesting. Back in 2006, my now, 24 year old and my youngest sister (who is the same age as him) set out to visit every lighthouse on the beaches of North Carolina. We missed out on the ones at the bottom of the state and opted for the Outer Banks lighthouses and further up north. Cape Hatteras is teh lighthouse that allowed people to walk up to the top. I let Emily and Anthony do that. I saw the staircase and the multitudes of people trying to go up and come down and I could not do it. I visited the Maritime Museum they had set up on the site while they walked to the top. I am glad I did not go. They were sweating buckets when they got done. We ended up visiting 5 lighthouses in all and then on to Kitty Hawk to see the Wright Brothers National Museum. It was a great time I and so much want to take the younger boys on the same trip one summer.

@LeaPea2417 It is nice and a monument for our state. It was moved from its original location due to beach erosion. Lots of fundraising and grants made that possible.
