Is she odd?

Whenever I have a new puppy in my home I make sure to observe their behaviour. I would stay home for most days getting to know them and keenly observing their every move. What they do, what they put in their mouth, and almost everything. I wouldn't sleep when they're not sleeping and I would wake up when they do too. I need to get to know them to be able to start and mould them into a well behaved dog later on. Danie is my bichon frise and she's our baby girl. And she has been with us for three weeks now. I noticed something that I find strange in her recently. When she pees, she lifts one of her hind legs just like a male dog would do, I really find this funny. The first time she came here she would just squat like a proper 'lady' would do. But now she's acting like a male dog! I am much aware that this kind of habit may be influenced by another dog but Danie is not with another dog. She stays inside the house with us. So is she odd? Or is this normal at all. I believe she may outgrew it though.

almost all of our dogs assume that position when they sleep. i have shot many images of our dogs sleeping with their abdomens exposed, like your dog. maybe she will outgrow that oddity.

I just learned from others here that small breed dogs lift their hind legs when peeing. It's because their too small. Danie rarely sleeps like that. That's why I took a photo.

@toniganzon oh, that is something i just learned. but our 2 small brown dogs Sydney and Chibi do urinate lifting one of their hind limbs because they are both male dogs. would this mean your puppy will pee the same way until she gets old?

I have never heard of this. I do know that with chickens when there are no roosters and only hens, the dominate hen can take on the role of the rooster and start to make a crowing sound in the mornings. Perhaps she is just expressing her own dominance?

No I don't think so. I just learned from other members here who have dogs too that it's common among small breed dogs because of their short legs.

@toniganzon Ok, that makes sense. The last small dog I had was when I was very young but he was a male so he automatically did this.

Dogs are very intelligent. I think that your dog doesn´t want to pee on her fur: had a puppy female dog that once did that. Once I cut the fur around her legs, she didn´t do that any more

Yeah I've been told it's because she's a small breed type of dog and their legs are very short. It's odd that she used to just squat and all of a sudden she started lifting her legs.

We had a small beagle once that did that. I think she developed the habit because of how short her legs were. If she squatted she touched the ground.

But she squatted before so what made her change?

@wolfgirl569 My Danie won't have that problem as she stays indoors and is not allowed to stay outside except when we go for a walk. She sleeps in my room and I have a training pad for her for peeing. She has rugs everywhere inside the house as her toilet.

@toniganzon She could just be noticing it. As a baby bay our beagle squatted too. I really felt bad for her if we had some snow. Even hiking her leg didnt get her high enough. lol Poor girl would try to sneak and pee in the house that time of year until I got a spot cleared for her.

A lady who just got a Labrador, told me that her male pet dog of a year old, still squat. She is concerned and hopes that eventually it will figure out what it should do. Yours is opposite heh!

I had male shih tzus in the past. Two actually and they never lifted their legs. I've been told by the breeder that as puppies they do that and as long as they don't see any other dogs lifting their hind legs, they will continue to squat. Traits in dogs can be influenced by other dogs. But basically, they don't lift their legs.

@YrNemo I wish but my dogs don't go out of the house. She does her business in the rug we provide for her and when she's in my room she uses the training pads. When we go out, I do clean her up the moment we come back inside the house.

@toniganzon (I wish we could train our pets to go washing paws with soap, drying their paws etc properly before coming close to us! ).

Maybe she's gay or something? but then it's just something they would grow on. Better have the pet vaccinated.

My dog has completed her vaccination already inlacing rabies. I would never have a pet that hasn't been vaccinated. I'm that responsible. And that's the strangest idea saying she's gay. She's not, How could you ever think that way?

Maybe it is just a phase she is going through, but I think she is too adorable and it is nice you can stay with her most days while she settles in by you.

I've been told it's common among small breeds. And I think that makes sense coz their legs are short. She gets separation anxiety when left alone that's why she got a lot of toys. And thank you. She really is adorable.
