Georgia Quilts

Almost everyone in North Georgia has someone in the family who has made quilts. My mother and grandmother made quilts out of feed sacks and pieces of worn out clothing during the depression. They did it so the family could sleep warm and comfortable on cold winter nights.
They washed and ironed the feed sacks and after cutting the pieces they pieced the quilt at night by the light of oil lamps or fire light. They also picked the cotton used for filling and carded it with wire brushes. It wasn't done for pleasure. It was just another chore that had to be done in their hard working lives.
But still they took the time to make their quilts as beautiful as possible with the material they had to work with. Some of these old quilts still survive and many are in museums for safe keeping. I inherited my love of quilting from them. It's one of the most enjoyable gifts they passed on to me.

@Courtlynn Winter time is a good time to quilt, you don't usually want to go out as much then.

I don't do as much as I used to. I don't seem to find enough time. I want to make a quilt for my granddaughter. I made her a couple when she was growing up but she's getting married in Oct. and I'd like to make a quilt for hers and the grooms queen size bed.

My mom used to quilt, my aunt quilts from time to time. I never learned how.
I have a quilt from my mom, it belonged to my brother and my uncle, who were only a few years apart.

@RubyHawk I am sure it is. I wouldn't know the first thing about beginning to quilt. I love to see what other people make. I like the quilt in your picture, not sure if I said that before.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If you want to quilt, get a quilting book or borrow one from the library. It will show you how. You’ll find patterns and all directions.

This is a very stunning looking quilt.
Did you make it?
My Gramma used to quilt using scrapes left over from dresses and aprons that she would sew for herself.
She used to take her cotton flour and sugar sacks, and cut them up, hem them and bleach the writing out of them and then iron on a transfer so that I could embroider them and then she'd use them as dish towels.

I never attempted making a quilt but I do love them. I have a summer weight one on my bed but it isn't handmade.
Your quilt is really beautiful.

@RubyHawk I'm sure your son loves it even if you think it's ugly

Thank you, most of my quilts are light weight. I did make one a couple of years ago that I called my ugly quilt. It was heavy and ugly and I would have thrown it away but my son wanted it so I gave it to him. I told him not to tell anyone that I made it.

@Marilynda1225 He does, he liked large heavy quilts on cold winter nights. I asked my daughter in law sometime back if she had it covered up with a pretty coverlet and she said no, she had it on the bed in plain site. She thought it looked good but I don't know why. I didn't even want it in the apartment.

I don’t remember now! Probably a couple of months. I worked on A quilt I made a few years ago for about a year. I had hundreds of stitches in it. My grandsons wanted to go to the lake or playground and I’d be working on the quilt. They hated that quilt.

That is a lovely quilt. I have seen some beautiful quilts like that in some of the stores and museums along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We have a group of quilters that use one of our city recreation centers to get together twice a week to work on their quilts. They do some amazing work, and all of their quilts are donated to the local homeless shelter to help keep people warm in the winter months. I really respect them for that, because their quilts are so beautiful that they could probably sell them for good money.
By the way, your quilt in your photo has orange and blue in it, the colors of the Florida Gators. I'm pretty sure all the Georgia Bulldog fans up there in Georgia might not appreciate the beauty of that quilt. But I love it!

Tony`s mom left his a few but he keeps them in the cedar chest. My step mother quilted. I have made tops but I need to quilt them. I am thinking about making and selling baby quilts.

The design is awesome. I love to try that when I get extra hands.
