Favorite TV Westerns

When I was growing up there were two kinds of shows on television: sitcoms and Westerns. I don't remember there being too much in the way of dramas. Programs typically lasted a half hour, with Westerns being an hour and some as long as 90 minutes. It was an age when sitcoms were good clean fun. Not like the sitcoms of today. However, this isn't about sitcoms, but Westerns, which were more my style than sitcoms. Another favorite Western from my younger days, that I didn't watch as often, but still enjoyed, was Wagon Train. It had a wonderful cast of interesting characters. Charlie Wooster, sometimes called Wishbone, the cook, Cooper, one of the scouts, and the wagon master, Major Seth Adams. All different, and all making the show come together in a way that made you become part of the action. And Westerns were full of action, which is what I loved about them. Cast members included: Frank McGrath as Charlie Wooster Terry Wilson as Bill Hawks the Assistant Wagon Master Ward Bond as Major Seth Adams the Wagon Master in the earliest episodes John McIntire as Christopher Hale the next Wagon Master Robert Fuller as one of the scouts Cooper Smith Denny Miller as one of the scouts Duke Shannon There were many more cast members, but those are the major ones. Each episode took passengers across the plain states from Missouri to California, battling anything and everything from stories about the passengers to Indians. Each episode had a story to tell. Did you watch Wagon Train? Thanks for reading. Some information verified from IMDB. Image from IMDB

When we went to the Saturday matinees years ago there was almost always a Western. I loved them.

@JohnRoberts Many years ago there was a bit of controversy about what saddles the buckjump riders could use. The American saddles were seen as being harder to get bucked out of and the stirrups were different. Gradually though I think the gear has been become more Americanised. I haven't seen Quigley Down Under.

@JudyEv There's just something about a Western that drew me to the story.

I did not watch this show but my Mama has many fond memories of it and has always mentioned it as one of her favorites.

@just4him I would love for her to be able to watch all of her favorite programs. Sadly, they live out in the country and the internet signal is horrible. They were even told by the satellite tv companies that they could not get signal out there. Frankly, on that aspect, I think the installers were just too darn lazy to try to really put an effort into finding a good spot for the satellite.

I am too young to remember Wagon Train, and I haven't seen it in reruns. Growing up, the only western I remember is Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, which I loved.

These weren't movies, but television programs. We all have our tastes. I don't do sitcoms.

I didn't watch it much, but since my grandfather liked westerns I remember it being on sometimes.

Since I became aware of Youtube movies, I can watch all the westerns I want. And yes, I have watched a number of Wagon Train episodes - very nice.

Wishbone was the cook on Rawhide. The actor was Paul Brinegar. I have seen a bunch of Wagon Train episodes. I prefer the black and white ones with Ward Bond over the color ones with John McIntire. A great show.
