Just Read The Directions

I am thinking about writing a book, its gonna be called just read the directions. I swear I hear more people whine about not knowing how to cook something and when they ask how did you learn I reply " I read the directions on the box!" Life is easy if you stop, flip it over and read. That is my public announcement for Sunday.

Some people just don't have this habit. I often read the instructions on the food packing I bought.

Not everyone does box cooking, but that aside..sometimes even having directions available..you can forget and leave something out..I manage to do that nearly everytime I make something I am afraid..! I can be staring at the directions and still forget..Next time I am going to get every single thing out.. first!

@andriaperry Been there, done that! Usually when I get creative in cooking instead of "reading the directions."

I saw a personalized license plate that said "RTFM." It was a computer tech, and he told me what it meant (hint: the last word is "manual").

I am lucky that my 14 year old daughter has seen me cook regularly and sometimes, I cook up a storm. I am proud to say that she has surprised me when she baked me chewy chocolate crinkles for my birthday !!!!

@andriaperry I just can't believe, that there are college students or middle aged people who don't even know how to make scrambled eggs ? Are they kidding us ?! Really ?! I hope people dependent of microwaveable meals will realize that what they are eating are saturated in salt, fat, chemical and it's expensive, come to think oof it. They can have a bestfriends, the slowcooker ! Just make sure they are just gonna be home when they start cooking and doing household chores. Just to be on the safe side. If only those who don't know how to cook ever realize and discover that cooking is so addictive and saves people alot of money ;-)

My mother was a teacher for Home Economics and besides other subjects taught cooking, too. She always wanted me to learn how to cook with her but I didn't want to do that. I told her that I was more intelligent than her pupils (a fact, not arrogance on my part), I could read and when the time would come that I would have to cook for myself, I would do it by reading recipes and following the instructions. It worked.

I so seldom cook with such things as boxes. I do once in a while buy a rice mix so I do stop to read the directions there. But mostly its stuff like knowing its a ration of 1 cup of rice or lentils to 3 cups of water. Easy peasy.

@andriaperry Actually... sorry if I'm a bit slow, but I didn't understand what you meant with that quote. What were you trying to say? Anyway, I agree with the response, as long as the instructions are clear, people will do well with reading instructions and following them. But, yes, I have to say, I have seen some unclear instructions before. They do exist. Maybe not for cooking, but usually in manuals for gadgets. Especially those that seem to have been originally written in another language, then translated to English. Something happens in the translation that they end up becoming nonsense in English. In any case, when it comes to cooking, I do always read the instructions and try to follow recipes as best I can.

"Life is easy if you stop." That's a nice wisdom. If only we will take time to simple things or instruction we will never be misled.

My daughter said she did not worry too much about learning to cook while living at home, as she knew she could read the directions in a cookbook. She did help out at home, and in many ways she is a better cook than I am. Now, I do not know whether to steal your title and beat you to it, or agree with @TRBRocks only because lately many things we get have instructions in six languages, none of them English.

I remember when my son was young, he was going to cook breakfast for everyone. When I got out of bed, the first thing he said was, mom I don't know what I did to the grits, they just didn't turn out right. Come to find out he didn't look at the directions and emptied the whole bag of grits in the pot and just covered them with water. There was enough grits in there to make a huge pot of grits. He wanted to know if I could fix it, but no, there's no turning back from that mistake!

To go up a stair you should start from step 1 and then just continue. Nothing is difficult if you read the instructions first.

oh yes, that is very true. It is very helpful to learn how to read directions. My grandma is a good cook but she did not teach me how to cook. I bake and cook because I read the cookbook.
