What is the point of having it if you can't enjoy it?

I was out earlier in the day and overheard a conversation between two guys. One was telling the other about a friend of his. His friend has a $400,000 house and a $50,000 car. He works two jobs to pay for it. The guy said his friend was complaining about how little time he has to enjoy the things he works so hard for. He spends 16 hours per day at his jobs and the other 8 hours are spent sleeping. The only time he enjoys his car is when he is driving to work and back again. He can't enjoy his spacious house or take care of the property because he is never home, except to sleep. He eats on the run. Would you say that this person is happy? I don't call this "Living the dream". I call it being enslaved by your dreams and ambitions.

Well he wont do what he is not happy doing. To me he must be happy working his life away. Some people complain but they are secretly happy.

@Courage7 Now There's a plot twist! Most people pretend they are happy when they are secretly miserable.

I used to have quite a lot of money...no debt no real assets just cash in the bank. Now I have a lot less. I would like to be on the same financial level I used to be on but I'd do things differently now.

do you ever think you should have invested in at least one real asset back then?

An RRSP so you could retire on the interest.

@hereandthere I had bonds and such but when they matured I spent the cash...I wish I'd bought a house.

He doesn't sound very happy. Maybe he needs a smaller house, a cheaper car and less hours at work

What a life! Soon he may not be there even to use his car and his house!

Your post made me think of some of my young relatives who left their parents' places in order to be free from the parents. These youths work night and day to pay rent & food while going to uni during the day. They love it that way unfortunately.

@Starmaiden By then, they will begin to sing the Abba's song, Money, "I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay, Ain't it sad And still there never seems to be a single penny left for me, That's too bad...'

It's still new to them. Give it 10 years. The newness will fade away and real life sets in.

Yes, I think there is no sense having money if you can't enjoy it.

So true- you have to take a good long look and see what you're doing. Most people will find it harder to give those things or part of those things up though.

You are right about your conclusion, the man can't possibly be enjoying life doing this! He's definitely enslaved, to his possessions.

Maybe he complains, but he probably sleeps like a baby knowing that his future and that of his family (if he has one) is secure. No chance of him being discarded in an old folks home when he gets old.

I would say he sounds conflicted? He has a need for expensive material possessions but cannot find a balance to enjoy these things. In his case time is more valuable than the money he earns?

I think he can enjoy that later when he will realized that It's already time to take slow on working so hard. This time, I always tell myself that when I could accumulate a fortune during my older days, that would be too late because I could no longer enjoy that much especially when you have weak muscles and bones already.

I think the same, we must work to get what we want but we also have to have time to enjoy it.
