Why Can't They Just Turn It In On Time

Today was the first day of the second week of school for our students. Believe it or not, I already have a list of students who are missing work. This isn't missing homework, this is missing classwork they just didn't bother to turn in when they finished it. When I ask for it, it is inevitably in their cubbie.
Why can't they just turn it in when they are supposed to?
Did you turn in your work on time when you were in school?

Yes, I always did. I usually had perfect attendance also.

I've talked to a couple of the moms. One spoke to the student and he's been better. Another shrugged and said, "He's always been like that." I'll get no help there until the bad grades show up on the progress report and she comes begging him a chance to make up the work.

Yeah, not in Catholic School. We still have some of the old show up or shut up attitude when it comes to getting your work in on time and putting it where it's suppose to go. The sisters might be gone, but their spirit hasn't completely left the building.

Of course they already have work missing. There are kids here that are already missing days of school. I guess I can't really say much about that though. I missed the first day of school once because we were coming back from vacation.
I didn't always. I was by far not a fantastic student, especially in middle school. My senior year I was really good though.

@thislittlepennyearns The kids are great, but there a a few who have learning challenges. I like it that I have time to slow things down and work with them in a way I couldn't in Public School.

@DWDavis well if it was pre planned, I guess it's not as bad.
How is your class this year? Good students?

I do not get that if they already finished the work. Most of them probably can't sit still for more than 5 minutes. Turning in their work would at least give them an excuse to get up and move around if they do not want the credit for the work they did.

@DWDavis Sounds like me in 4th through 6th, but I at least still made sure to turn it in. Here teach, take that. What grade you teach?

@crossbones27 Last year and this year 4th grade is my home. Prior to that, I taught middle school for 15 years.

I had a parent conference with the mom of a 7th grader once because he was missing so many assignments. We found them done and balled up in the bottom of his locker. When we asked him why he hadn't turned them in he shrugged and said, "I dunno."

Maybe they need to put a reminder in their phones! They'd probably pay attention to anything their phone told them. :)

Yes, until 10th grade and that year I must have taken a break or something because I remember only getting 3 credits out of 8. You don't want those poor kids to have to walk all the way over to your desk to give you a paper do you, thats a lot of work LOL

When this becomes a habit of kids it just really affects teachers, unfortunately.
When these things becomes habitual for a week already, parents need to be informed about their child's performance at school so that the child knows that there is a communication between the teacher and the parent that way there is no excuse for the student to be falling behind.
