Overcharged for eggs. Again.

Went to the local supermarket for some large brown eggs. The price on the shelf said $1.99. When we rang it up at the register (self-checkout) the price came out to $2.09. I told hubby about it and said that we should go to customer service. He chose to go home and not deal with it. He didn't have to. I could have taken care of it. I know it is only ten cents difference and perhaps doesn't make that much of a deal, but that's not the point. Why should I overpay for something? Unless the computer price is correct and the shelf price was not updated. But I doubt that is the case. Argh!

I would have gone back if it was the second time and made a point of telling them that it was the second time. I also would have told them that I was calling Consumer Affairs and the county scales and measurements department.

I never heard of "the county scales and measurements department". What do they do?

@lovebuglena In my state they have them to make sure that the scales and price registers and stuff are accurate.

Send an email to the corporate HQ asking why you were charged more at the self-check out register than the price shown on the shelf. Let them know you are a regular customer and ordinarily happy shopping with them but are very disappointed at their oversight on this matter. I think that will get you a better response than possibly getting a dime back from the local manager.

@lovebuglena It is unprofessional. I would imagine in most states, the store would be obligated by the visible price on the sticker.

@DWDavis If you go to customer service and tell them they will refund you the difference.

We always buy toothpaste there. Many times instead of the $6.39 price that was on the shelf we were charged a bit over $8 at checkout. Each time we went to customer service and got money back for the difference. But then recently the price sticker on the shelf was changed to that over $8 price. I guess they had not updated the shelf price sticker right when the price went up. And maybe that is the case with the eggs. The price may have gone up but shelf sticker wasn't updated. If that is the case it's unprofessional. And if I was alone I'd go and get the ten cents back. Not my fault this happened.

Have a chat with the customer service representative to clear up the matter.

I noticed that too, so I eagle eye as much as I can, but if I missed anything, as I leave the cashier, I park my cart, check things making sure my receipt is right. If I've a question about pricing I'd go to customer service before I leave. Being a bus rider, I like to clarify it right away. I bought a bread that I thought was 2.79 but charged 5.19! I stood there a second or 2 as I packed my purchase and marched to customer service. I had picked the wrong bread for the sale ones were all out. Got a refund for it and a raincheck for the sale item. Whether my mistake or not I go with a query about it to customer service.

Always going to customer service is a must if there is ever a discrepancy. Although if I was undercharged I don't think I'd do that.

If I go to a store on my own, which means taking the bus, I always make sure to check the receipt because if something is amiss and I find out about it at home it will not be worth it to go back to the store to get money back because the commute there and back will be $5.50.

@lovebuglena Me too. I am also a bus rider, so I check my receipt always before I leave the store and mostly at the cashier's stand... that is if they go slowly. Sometimes my Ocuvite coupon just didn't want to be utilized at the cashier's stand. Luckily there's customer service to go to for problems.

Here in Australia, if an item scans at a higher price than is shown on the shelf, you are entitled to a refund of the full price of that item (not just the difference between the two.) I always check my dockets as I am leaving the store, and thanks to sloppy pricing by supermarkets have saved a small fortune over the years. One year I even got our Christmas ham for free, because it scanned incorrectly.

That is interesting. As far I as know, and from experience, they only give you the difference in price here. You don't get a full refund. I'd love that.

@lovebuglena It was brought in here back when they first introduced bar codes, as opposed to the price actually being stamped on the products. Lots of people protested that there was likely to be problems with differences between the shelf price and the scanned price, and the result was this policy. I'm not sure whether it is actually a law, but all the supermarkets observe it.
