I hope I don’t get squashed

Our property is about a kilometre off a main highway which.is the route used by a lot of massive trucks. Some are carrying logs or woodchip but most are carrying lithium from Greenbushes, a town to the south of us. Tin mining started in that area in 1888 and for the past 30 years lithium has also been mined. An ever-increasing demand for lithium for batteries and components in the growing electric vehicle market has seen the Greenbushes mine become the largest in the world With a new $400 million dollar refinery being established at Kwinana on the coast, the mine is set to expand even more. There are reports that an extra 400 trucks a day will soon be running on ‘our’ road. 400! That is a huge number of trucks and most are bound to run in daylight hours. Turning out in front of these monsters looks set to become even more difficult – which is why I hope I don’t get squashed.

This is the problem we have on the highway not far from us. Thousands of trucks that brings goods from Spain and Italy to the European countries in the north. They cross Switzerland because it's the shortest route to Germany and Austria.

Half of the international traffic here comes from Spain. They deserve France and Northern Europe.

@JudyEv Italy has a very bad railway system, it is the same for Spain, so everything comes on big trucks (too big for European roads).

They have let our railway system run down so now it would cost too much to upgrade the railway which could have taken some of these products.

I have never seen a truck with 3 trailers attached to it. That must be really hard to maneuver.

You're welcome but it's not all that old @JudyEv some of the fun ones I've found are from 2006.

They are very adept at it but maybe, in this case, they'd drop the back one off before trying to manoeuvre. And thanks for going back to such an old post.

@JudyEv I even don't like seeing big trucks on the public highways because what if they will collide. Oh' I even don't like the thought.

@arunima25 Yes that is a lot isn't it? That will be 300 going each way but it is still a great many trucks plus all the usual cars as well.

600 trucks a day is about 599 1/2 too many for me. Please be extremely careful. Remember, it's not only your driving that matters. Watch out for the other guys; especially the big, 18 wheeler type guys.

That length is only allowed in the north of the state but it's the only photo of a truck I had. But we'll have dozens of two-trailer trucks.

We have well back off the road and don't hear them. Occasionally we'll hear a particularly noisy motor-bike. It's more about whether it will be difficult to turn onto the highway from our side road. Probably it will be perfectly okay. We only leave the place once or twice a week so it's not like we're communing every day.

That's an interesting problem you have there. I wouldn't want to be turning out onto the highway with them around.

If they needed to brake suddenly I think it would take them half a mile to pull up. They don't travel slowly either.

It is not only to be crushed, I came behind a truck with my particular vehicle and a bolt of the truck came off and was stuck in the mudguard, if I had gone a little faster it would have been stuck in my chest. For half a second I am alive.

Oh my gosh wow that is a HUGE increase in traffic on that road. It will be a lot of wear and tear on the roads. The big trucks around here ruin the roads so we get horrible pot holes.

Except that we only leave the place once or twice a week. And it's perfect for us at the moment so we'll just wait and see. Maybe they'll build a bypass round the town itself.
