There is a long time that I have not written a movie review. I watched this Russian super production yesterday on Youtube. Yes, Russia has super productions ! This one is a romanced biography of Alexander Kolchak, an Admiral of the Russian Imperial fleet who became the leader of the Russian White Army after the October Revolution. I suspect that we would have 15 movies about him if he had been American, but as a biography of a reactionary hero was not politically correct in the USSR, the Russians waited until 2008 to see one. However they put a lot of money in it : the naval fights are amazingly good, a bit gore though, it is war, contrasting with a soppy love romance between the hero and the wife of another Navy officer unrolling during all the movie. The main roles are played by top Russian actors. Kolchak is played by Konstantin Khabensky who has received 28 rewards for his performances and has been elected the most popular Russian actor of the century in 2015, and the most popular Russian actor in 2017 together with Sergei Bezrukov, who was playing the role of general Kappel in this movie. This masterpiece worth several Hollywood movies is available on Youtube in Russian with English subtitles available on the settings.
Re-upload of this Russian film with better quality. Disclaimer: I still don't own anything.

I read that it has a bad ending. Isn't it interesting how different nationalities like to do things like end their films in a certain way or whatever? We have really enjoyed French films too when they have an international film festival here.

We are #1 in Europe for the number of movies, about 300 each year. The average quality is low, but on the lot there is always a handful interesting enough to be shown in movie festivals out of France.

@topffer I guess they pick the best of them for the festivals but we have certainly enjoyed them.

It is a typical Russian movie with a bad ending for the hero. They make usually low budget movies, this one is a nice exception. I do not think that you will be able to download the subtitles from Youtube, but they are probably available online.

How did you come to find this Russian movie? Looking at the comments, it seems many found it impressive. For you to say masterpiece, wow, it must have really left an impression - I'll have to book mark this one and watch this!

Completely by accident, it was in the list of movies suggested by Youtube on the right of a video page. It unrolls like a novel of Tolstoy or Dostoevsky, typically Russian. They are good to write dramas.

Hmmm... while you make the movie sound interesting, Top, I stay away from war movies in general. Truth be told, I am usually only interested in what are considered "kid's movies". (I don't "get into" violence, blood and guts. *shrug*) I am glad you enjoyed the movie, though.

You certainly should better stay away of this one then, it is a bloody period of the History of Russia and the fights are very realistic.

Read this post of yours too late... Let hope the movie will still be there the coming weekend. I used to avoid war movies or any movies with the potential of flirting/romance between people who married to someone else but will check this one out for sure. (A friend who works in Chechnya sent me some comedies from there a decade ago. I like their humor very much. Curious about that of Russians!)

Russians are better for dramas than for comedies, and there is absolutely no humor in this movie. I heard that a Russian tv channel has started a weekly show to glorify Putin, this one may be fun.

@YrNemo Never heard of cult of personality ? He is restoring it in Russia. Here the cover of the 2018 Putin calendar.

@topffer How could they do that? Won't Putin get embarrassed?

I didn't see it. I don't watch Russian movies because I don't like their language.

I cannot tell if I like Russian, I do not speak Russian, but I liked this movie. I suppose you can watch it dubbed in Romanian.
