That Royal taste

When I was a child I remember my mother using the Royal icing method for the frosting on her cakes - and it tasted awesome! Unfortunately, for many years now I cannot find cakes with royal icing in the cake shops - butter icing , which I hate - has taken over. Of course, I could make my own royal icing , but I won't bother. In fact I am kind of happy that my favorite isn't easily available - less temptation for me. Sixteen years ago when I became serious about healthy eating, I cut back drastically on sweet stuff. However, I would welcome a slice of cake with royal icing at least twice a year. Is there a favorite sweet or food from your childhood that you no longer indulge in? What kind of frosting do you use on your cakes? Royal icing is made with icing sugar, egg whites , a bit of lemon juice and glycerine.

I have never heard of royal icing but I would eat it with the raw eggs in it. Buttercream icing my daughter likes but I hate. I like cream cheese icing. The only food my mother cooks good is pecan pie.

I never liked any kind of frosting. I prefer simple cakes, even better pies. I only like whipped cream on cakes, not other kinds of icing.

I used to enjoy milk tart when my grandmother made it. I haven't eaten milk tart in years. I can't get the recipe right and store bought does not taste the same.

@Kandae11 almost looks as good as those my gran used to make. I just can't get it to taste like her milk tart did. I hope you try to make one, it could be a new favourite of yours.

I've never heard of royal icing. Your description of it sounds delicious. My favorite dessert was a lemon meringue pie. I haven't had lemon meringue pie in a long time. I'm afraid if it were offered right now, I would indulge and ruin my diet doing so, but I would savor every delicious mouthful.

@thelme55 Awesome! I doubt I'll find any in the cake shops around here, so I'll probably have to bake my own for Christmas.

I like butter icing but feel royal icing is more for the firmness of the cake. I do not eat royal icing

I only like simple spongy cake... no icing or cream or anything. My daughter just made some for me. Alas, she did put too much of baking soda in and the cake doesn't taste so good. I will have to swallow it down though to make her happy.

yes, sometimes an inexperienced baker might put a bit too much of one ingredient or the other.

I'm not fussed about Royal icing. It's a bit too sweet somehow. Butter cream icing probably has an equal amount of sugar but I enjoy that more.

Hmmm, royal icing. I've heard of it, but I don't know if I've had it. I used to like a candy called lik-m-ade , candy sticks that you dunk into colorful sugar. Tried it again as an adult. Not as magical. lol
