Hello everyone. This is something I dreaded. To cook rice without rice cooker. I remember when I was young and had no choice but to cook rice for my family, the rice that I cooked that time was a layer of burnt bottom, well cooked rice in the middle and uncooked rice at the top. So from then on I never cooked rice on stove again. I am so thankful for rice cooker than I can cook rice without being stressed out. But now, I guess it come sin time, I just cooked a perfect rice (hopefully?!?) on stove since we do not have power yet here.

Yes, cooking rice on stove can be frustrating some times. We use pressure cooker to cook the rice on stove if there is no electricity avilable. Hope you will have nicely cooked rice this time on your stove! All the best!

@hereandthere , what do you mean? In India people buy pressure cooker to have cooked rice! It is very easy take one measure of rice in the cooker and three measureful of water and after cooker starts emitting teh steam put the weight on. Just after three whistles put off the stove and wait till cooker gets cold to get nice boiled rice. you can adjust the water according tom the needs. It is better to soak the rice in water for 15 to 30 minutes before cooking to have a nice texture. I am mentioning alternative method in @raski 's response please go through that! The above picture will give you an idea!

I often cook rice on the gas stove, not always I use the rice cooker. If the proportion of water is fine it comes out perfect.

You just reminded me I have a rice cooker. Actually two. One a big thing that works by itself. The other is a microwave one, but I made popcorn in it and may have ruined it! Never used rice in either as a saucepan seems more convenient and I also have a pressure cooker. If you take the rice off before cooked and let it sit the pan does not burn, I find

Just lower the fire if the water has already subsided. You can still have the dry part in the bottom but it wasn't burning. I love that part if it's fairly cook.

Just like you, I can't cook a perfect rice without the rice cooker. But my husband cooks a perfect rice using an ordinary pot. Our rice cooker already failed in cooking aperfect rice so we don't use it anymore. On the other hand, it is good because our electric bill lowered.
