What Does Autumn Mean To You?

I know many are jumping up and down because cold weather is coming, or came last night. But to each person Autumn means something different. Here in central Alabama it means "you got 2, maybe 3 months to get`er done!" Meaning Cold weather will be here by the end of the year, my winter is January and February, for the most part February is the coldest month where day time highs are around 50 degrees F, but we have the potential to have that week of freezing temps that will bust water pipes. Its 90 degrees / 32 C and the dirt is dry as powder. The leaves are falling because they have dried up due to the lack of rain. Autumn means the holidays are coming. Autumn means shorter days, dark at 4 pm. Autumn means clean off the garden and raise it filled with cold weather vegetables and greens. Autumn means I can get more work done in the daytime, since its dark around 4 pm! Autumn means I have to change my life around again, to fit the daylight, or relearn to work in the dark, usually the latter. The list goes on and on. So, no I am not happy that summer is coming to an end. How about you what does Autumn mean to you? Photo mine - the confederate roses, they only bloom in the autumn at my house.

It means an end to the summer I don't like the summer as it's too hot and the sunlight is too strong sometimes...I've got some weird thing that means my eyes don't work well in bright sunlight so I get headaches and other issues. I don't think I've ever heard a US person call it Autumn...normally it's fall over there, does it vary according to where you live what you call it?

I was raised calling this season both autumn and fall, depends who I am talking to,I use each word differently. For instance, I was raised hearing people call the last meal of the day supper, but as I grew older I tend to say dinner.

@andriaperry same here as regards supper. I always say dinner but many do say supper...the use of the word supper here in the context of a meal can be seen as a "class" thing

What is autumn ? Here in Southern CA, the fall season isn't as exactly apparent except for Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations. The leaves have been turning brown since before summer - we don't get those brilliant autumn colors like we see in photos of other places. There is no clear line of summer's end - it can remain hot here for a long time. Though oddly this year the nights/mornings are rather cool - it's a mixed bag of weather.

Autumn is lovely here. I wish it weren't shadowed by my grown up brain saying that sooner than later there will be ice and probably snow packed on the roads for too many weeks. I so am not looking forward to morning ice and scraping the windshield and trying not to freak about the upcoming drive.

Sometimes I call it Autumn, sometimes Fall. I do expect the leaves to fall. I hope to se an end to the lawn mowing tasks. As I have learned to do more with herbs it means time to make vinegars and oils and salves. Maybe this year I will also make gifts of herb concoctions.

Not that there's much of an autumn here but it does mean my morning glories are sprouting so that I'll have pretty blooms by end of October. Oh yeah, it's not up in the 100s anymore but it might still get into the upper 90s, it's more of a seasaw season That's a really good shot of some very pretty roses

For me autumn means that I can come out of summer hibernation. Its been so hot and humid that I hibernated inside in the a/c for the most part. We'll enjoy the season of autumn, going for walks and outings and picnics for the first half of the season. The second half of the season we play things by ear, when will we take the vehicles in to have the winters put on. Other then that we'll enjoy every single day before the snow flies, and yes, it can and has fallen during autumn.

Its the opposite for me, I stay inside more in the winter, if its cold winter and I am outside from Spring till winter

Love the flowers. It means I will soon be complaining about the cold weather. I also hate the short days. I like the colors of autumn but like the colors of spring even more. I will be lucky if I get 2 month before we 50 degrees here for a high. Already starting to see that for the lows.

Autumn is this cute girl that I've had my eye on for some time. Shhh...don't tell my girlfriend though! lol I look forward to the cooler weather, but unfortunately here in Florida the cooler weather won't start until the end of November or beginning of December. It still feels like summer here right now. While the rest of the world celebrates the traditional seasons of summer, fall, winter and spring, Florida isn't so lucky. We don't really have those kinds of seasons, so instead, our seasons are as follows: Tourist season, Love Bug season, Wildfire season, and Hurricane season.

@andriaperry Or, we also define our seasons by the following: Summer Part 1, Summer Part 2, Summer Part 3, Christmas Day. Repeat

I thoroughly enjoy autumn. For me, it means the leaves falling from the trees, wearing layers and scarves, and watching movies on rainy sundays.

Autumn means Halloween! And (hopefully) cooler temperatures...although it's still over 90 here in California, too. Autumn also means the holiday season has officially arrived.
