September 25th is the day to search through your old records and Cd's to honor those artists whose chart toping tunes made them unforgettable, at least for one brief moment in their musical career. It’s National One-Hit Wonder Day! Do any of these tunes bring back memories? Here's 10 favorites of mine.... 1961- "The Lion Sleep Tonight"- The Tokens 1963- "Wipe Out" - The Surfaris 1965- "Eve of Destruction" - Barry McGuire 1966- "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!" - Napoleon XIV 1970- "In the Summertime"- Mungo Jerry 1972- "Dancin In The Moonlight"- King Harvest 1978- "I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round)" by Alicia Bridges 1979- "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"- Charlie Daniels Band 1983- "Puttin On The Ritz"- by Taco 1988 – “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin So, any of these tunes ring a bell? Let's compare "NOTES." Can you name some One-Hit Wonders that were your favorites or perhaps your least favorite, lol. Source- nationaldaycalendar.com Photo-kiddnation.com

Charlie Daniels wasn't a one-hit wonder by ANY stretch. "Uneasy Rider" was a top ten song in 1973. "The South's Gonna Do It Again," "In America," "The Legend of Wooley Swamp," and "Still in Saigon" were also top 40 hits. You were just checking to see if I was awake, weren't you? As for one-hit wonders, this is one of my favorites:
Dean does his final tune from a wonderful set at a local venue. "Ariel" has been a favorite song of mine since 1977, and a favorite name of mine since I can ...

I see what you are getting at, but I think the source touting "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" as a one-hit wonder used the fact that it was their biggest selling hit in addition to being a cross-over success on both the Hot Country Singles and Billboard Hot 100 charts. There is no discounting Charlie's successful career in Country and on the Country charts as you point out. As a pop/rock/country tune played on mainstream FM rock radio stations that song was "big." It was difficult for the band to reproduce that level of success which probably played into this song being put on a One-Hit Wonder list. I agree overall, that Daniels enjoyed success, but not as a mainstream pop artist, since his genre was Country. That's why lists can be fun, to argue the merits of them. As always when it comes to music history you are wide awake!

I like the version of "Puttin On The Ritz" of Taco, even if this song is a lot older than 1983.

@LadyDuck The song was by a Country Artist Band. An excellent song # 3 on the Billboard chart which pushed the bands album sales to multi-platinum (a big deal in the music business). Country artists usually don't have songs which cross over into mainstream rock as "huge hits." Possibly why some are not familiar with the tune. This song achieved their highest success on the mainstream pop/rock charts. Very catchy song. Take a listen... Just love great fiddle playing

Taco's version hit # 4 on the Billboard charts in 1983. This was originally written in 1929 by legendary composer Irving Berlin ("God Bless America") That's bringing back a classic! Any not on this list you enjoy?

The Lion Sleeps Tonight. That one is annoying as it can go through your head for the rest of the day once you hear it. I remember Wipe Out, but can't remember any of the words at the moment. I'm sure they would come back if I heard them. They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa was a favorite back in the day. Puttin on The Ritz - Great song. Loved it in the movie Frankenstein. Don't Worry Be Happy - also a good song. Now had you put any of those songs in your quiz, I wouldn't have gotten a single one. Especially since I don't know any of those artists.

I know one hit song sung by Anita Ward called "Ring My Bell." The tunes you have mentioned I do remember. Also the song by Boris Pickett "The Monster Mash" comes to mind as well as "The Curly Shuffle" by Jump In The Saddle.

Great additions George! Boris Karloff loved Monster Mash. He performed it on a special Halloween edition of the variety show Shindig! on October 30, 1965. The Curley Shuffle was a great novelty song. The tune reached # 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1984. Ring My Bell was considered a very suggestive lyric, but hardly raised any concern in the sexually promiscuous 70's.

I think that Disco Duck was a one hit wonder. It wasn't a favorite song but it was a fun song.
This was a 70s hit for Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots

Wasn't Wipe Out a great song! Do you remember the song "Sugar Sugar" another One-hit wonder from the group The Archies? The Archies were the group that performed on the Saturday morning cartoon Archie. The group itself was never seen, just the cartoon characters.
"Sugar, Sugar" is one of 16 animated music segments created to be shown on "The Archie Comedy Hour" on CBS-TV in 1969, and the song is included on The Archie...

Nice Pick! Remember that one well too.... Nazareth made this song a hit, but it was originally released by the Everly Brothers on their 1960 album A Date With The Everly Brothers. The screaming vocals by the lead singer definitely made you feel the pain of love, lol.

@JudyEv It was a huge hit in the States. The song represented the Country music craze of the 90's where New Country music replaced the older style artists.

With many of those songs which became smash hits it definitely is disappointing when the artist can't capture that same exact magic... Do you remember the song "Achy Breaky Heart." I thought after that song came out the artist would be a huge musical success. Was this song popular in Australia?
