Cooking For One

Happy Wednesday everyone! It's a sunny and almost warm start to my day here. In fact, it's nice enough to sit outside and that's what I did. After the pups did their thing I brought my coffee outside and enjoyed a cup while watching a neighbor do some work in his garden. Finally....a little fresh air and it feels so good. As I've said in previous posts, my daughter is on a cruise and I'm home alone this week. So far everything is going smoothly and it's already mid-week. It's funny but I really thought I wouldn't cook much for myself this week but old habits are hard to break. I'm so used to cooking almost every night that I've just continued and don't mind so much cooking for myself. The only thing is cooking for one is hard when it comes to portions. It always seems like too much but I'm happy with leftovers. Last night my oldest daughter came over to visit and we watched Dancing With the Stars and chit chatted while the show was on. I got caught up on what the grandkids are doing and we even made a tentative plan for Thanksgiving (she always cooks). I can't believe we're already talking about turkey day and what to make. The one thing I know I'm making is fried cauliflower which has been a traditional dish in our family and we haven't had it for many years. I'm in the mood to bring back some old traditions so the grandkids can enjoy what they've been missing. Now that I'm talking about food it's time to get some breakfast and see what's happening in the myLot world.

I have been home alone very few times in my life, my husband was always with me. The few times I was alone I cooked anyway.

@Marilynda1225 Cooking for one is not a chore and you cook what you like. I also like a good dinner.

I thought I would take this week off but it seems cooking isn't as much of a chore as I thought it was. Besides I like a good meal every evening.

Wish I could send you the sun but it's not going to hang around here very long. We're due for some very unpleasant weather later in the day. Fried cauliflower is easy.....take florets, dip in egg, roll in bread crumbs and deep fry. Oh so delicious

Since I am generally cooking for one..I know the thing about portions. It seems like one meal will hang around here forever. I could always halve recipes but it seems like too much trouble.

It has been such a beautiful day, and is one of the reasons I haven’t been here. Cooking for one isn’t the same as cooking for others. In the days when my husband had to go to conventions and I wasn’t able to travel with him, I never bothered cooking for myself. Usually, I was invited to a friend’s house for dinner or just snacked. Your fried cauliflower sounds fabulous! This isn’t my year for Thanksgiving, but I know we will be in Florida and celebrate with friends.

I didn't think I'd cook for myself either but so far it hasn't been a hassle. My daughter does Thanksgiving and she only lives 5 min away so traveling isn't a problem.

@Marilynda1225 So what did you make for dinner? Being 5 minutes away from your daughter is wonderful. The only one who lives close to us now is our son. 1.8 miles away. . !400+ from Florida.

It is hard to believe that is so close to Thanksgiving already, Then before you know it another year will be passed by. As for me, I an just sitting here putting off cutting my grass. I was going to cut it yesterday, then I seen I needed gas. So that was as good excuse as any for not cuttings it, I said, well there's no need to go to town just for gas! lol I'll wait till tomorrow. Well this morning I went and got the gas and still haven't gotten out to cut it. As you see I'm on mylot instead!

myLot is a great escape for anything you don't feel like doing. I find myself here often when I want to avoid doing something. I'm sure you'll get to the grass eventually. It's hard to believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Time goes by too fast

I've lived alone since 1977 and have cooked for myself most of the time but I always end up with enough for at least 2 days.

Making for one is mostly easy to me. But then i do it often. Thanksgiving for us is the same easy foods and usually just us three, my uncle and our family friend but this year is probably just us three and maybe our ff since my uncle is in NH now. So no planning needed for us. Thankfully. But hope the kids enjoy that food.

When you're used to cooking it's the natural thing to do. I've always cooked, not that I especially enjoy cooking but it's something that has to be done, and I don't like eating junk.Sounds like a nice visit with your daughter.

I am glad that you got a somewhat decent day to spend some time outside and enjoy a little fresh air. The world feels better when we do that doesn't it? I usually feel that cooking just for myself is a challenging waste of time. I'm not doing it out of love for any family member, and there is nobody to impress. Its just going thru the motions. But on occasion we all have to do just that. Its so nice that your daughter stopped in last night to help break up the week-you raised her right!!

I usually just buy cooked food when I'm alone at home. I only like to cook when family's around.

I watched some of DWTS as well, just to see who all was on it this year. Fried cauliflower sounds delicious, never had it.
