What Causes Recliners to Break?

I mentioned being on our recliner earlier and as I said I'm our my legs are propped up on four pillows. Our recliner is beginning to break and I wonder if my using the pillows on the for rest have something to do with it. My husband uses it a lot too and he's not a small guy. When we got it I though the previous owners didn't have it long but found something better. When I asked my husband he thought they had it several years before bringing it to us. It's fancier than others we've had in that it's electric. Even then it only goes up so high. Even with pillows my feet aren't as high as they're supposed to be, but I can't spend every waking moment in bed. And for whatever reason my fingers fall asleep more in that position where they've not fallen asleep our here yet. I am considering buying an inversion recliner and will share on that another day. My image will have to wait as I'm running into a run time error, so I've posted the inversion chairs instead I'd like to get the inset sometime but not sure if we ordered it whether we could easily or it together

I had a recliner break but it had a manual handle for the footrest. It was the handle that broke.

I've had one that broke that way too but mine was over twenty years old so I didn't feel bad about it.

@MarshaMusselman Mine was about ten years old and it replaced an older one that finally fell apart after twenty some years. That first one was a cheap one to start with and saw a lot of abuse from our two sons while they were growing up.

@DWDavis I think ours would last longer if we could both shed a few pounds. (Edited)

We do not have a recliner, I put my feet on a small table if I need to rest my legs, an inverted recliner would put my head too low and I would suffer of vertigo.

@MarshaMusselman I like to keep my back straight, we have a sofa and I keep a footrest in front of the sofa.

@LadyDuck a foot rest is better than keeping ones feet just on the floor but I will probably have to invest eventually in something to get my feet and legs higher that may be down the road though.

I think the one chair has different settings for how low the back might go. Someone said I could try theirs out sometime and I would have already taken her up on it had the wound been healed already. I don't think I'd like being back on the angle of the larger photo unless I could control it enough. I'm thinking of something where I can watch a little TV or read which would be more the inset.

Another member used to repair them and found that users tended to lean forward when raising the foot section. I've tried to keep pillows from falling off so I know I've done that too; now I'm trying to lean back until it's up and then fixing the pillows.

Used to do on the road furniture repair with another man in Quebec. Mostly warranty work. You wouldn't believe how many people slowly destroy the reclining mechanism by leaning forward while they try to operate the lever. When you do that your weight is working against the system. If you lean back while operating the lever it will operate smoothly and easily with just the pressure of two fingers. That being said, in the name of saving money, those mechanisms were getting flimsier and flimsier. The ones in the late eighties were pretty robust but around nineteen ninety the company most of our work came from introduced much lighter equipment insisting that the engineers thought they were better. We watched customers bend brand new ones the first time they tried to operate the recliner. My boss did write a letter outlining the issue to that company's management. Don't know if they ever listened.

@MarshaMusselman Unless the pillows are really heavy I doubt they are causing significant damage.

Do you think that my putting pillows on the foot rest to elevate my feet might be causing it's demise? I'll have to watch so I don't try to keep the pillows on while it's being raised for I'm sure I'm leaning forwarded while doing so. Hadn't thought about that. Thought it was the weight of the pillows

My parents had recliners, and after seeing them, decided I didn't like the look of them in my house. I prop my legs up on a chaise longe.

A small table like Anna uses or a chaise wouldn't get my feet up far enough I don't think. If I didn't have the wound or issues with circulation it might be nice, but...
