October has started and Autumn is showing its colors. Some trees are already dropping their leaves, while others are turning red and yellow, painting the hills with nice colored spots. I have been grocery shopping in Italy yesterday and I have brought home some fruits and vegetables that are now in season. The top part of my photo shows black figs and a small pomegranate (still on my tree). The bottom photo wild mushrooms, cachi, or kaki (similar to persimmons but sweeter and softer) and red grapes. It rained yesterday evening and I used the mushrooms to make a Tuscan soup that has been perfect to warm up in an almost cold evening. Put aside pumpkins, which are the October fruits and vegetables in your area?

I love figs! I always remember eating figs from one of our trees in our orchard when I lived in Italy. One of my favorite memories from Italy. Here, the apples are at their peak and there are pumpkins everywhere as you can see from this picture I took at a market.

@LadyDuck True! We tried growing figs in our garden in Canada but it only produced a few fruits each year but we were happy with it!

I think that almost every house has a fig tree in the garden in Italy. I have one fig in the garden, but it produces the small green figs, that are excellent, but those are summer fruits. Apples are good and I also like pumpkins.

They were really good, I bought 1 kilo and used half to make a fig jam, I serve it with mature cheese.

The apples are available all year round, the kaki and figs have a very short season. It's a shame, I like figs with Prosciutto.

I've seen every kind of squash and eggplant in abundance. There's still a good assortment of fruit, but it's becoming more expensive. Enjoy your soup. I've never had it. I'll need to look up a recipe for it.

We had our soup last evening, for tonight I am making a stew. Eggplants are available during the whole summer, there are less now. The apples are now cheap.

I do not like mushrooms at all but my boyfriend and mother do. I eat dried figs in my smoothies and cereal. I have never seen one fresh they look much different then I expected. Pomegranates are very good for you so that is really lucky you have a tree that grows them! I bought red grapes on sale a few days ago at Aldi's 99 cents a pound.

@LadyDuck someday I hope to try a fresh fig. I'll have to see if Wegmans carried them and I would buy one each for my kids and I and my mother to try.

Dried figs have a totally different taste from fresh figs. I have a tree in the garden but I had not many figs this year. The figs season will soon be over. The pomegranate trees are beautiful when covered with their red flowers.

OMG, young cèpes! I would like to see some in France, but it has quite not rained here since the beginning of July. I had a persimmon tree in the garden of my previous house, they were not good before December. And I was letting most of them to birds, I do not like them a lot. Same for chestnuts, I pick only 1 or 2 kg. I like grapes, but it is a bit late now... Something that I like and pick in the woods in December are medlars.

@LadyDuck Smaller cèpes are better, and you have less risks to find squatters. For medlars, it is rare to see some in grocery shops, but I have localized several in public forests. I also pick "cornouilles" in woods. I do not the English name, it is a red fruit looking like an olive, good in jams and cakes, but long to prepare because of a pit difficult to remove.

@topffer I know what "cournouilles" are, I think they are called Cornellian cherries, I have never tried the fruits. Small cèpes are a lot better, too many times the big ones are squatted and almost empty in the middle. Today it rains, if tomorrow the sun shines, I could try my luck in the woods.

I love cèpes, I have found them in Italy, I had seen some bigger ones here, but they were too expensive. It is such a long time that I do not see medlars I loved those fruits. I am not a fan of persimmons, I like cachi more, but I bought them only to make a jam to serve with cheese. We had a lot of chestnuts this year, but very little mushrooms.

Wow, so that's how figs look. I only know of them because they were mentioned in the bible. Are they sweet? What about that pomegranate? Is that sweet also? Oh, you have lots of fruits in season there.

@LadyDuck - Yummy! I love pumpkins pies. Don't know if you ever watched this cooking show called "Two Fat Ladies". It was two fat ladies who did a lot of cooking so that what's they named the TV show. At any rate one of the ladies was using pumpkin as a main ingredient in one of her recipes. She's singing praises of the pumpkin. But then she says "Americans do terrible things to pumpkins like put them in pies." I couldn't stop laughing. I know you're not American so it gives me great pleasure to know that non-Americans do terrible things like that to. P.S. Is your recipe for Tuscan soup EZ? I love mushrooms!

I'm surprised that it is warm enough in Switzerland for pomegranates. When I think of this fruit, I always think of Turkey where I drank the juice every day. It's made everywhere in the streets and on the beach at the end of summer.

You can see a pomegranate tree in almost every garden here. The weather of the south of Switzerland is very different from the north, there are also lemon and olive trees along the lake of Lugano. My tree is still small, but the pomegranates are good. I keep the smallest for decorating the table during the Christmas holidays.

@MALUSE "South of the Alps" where we live is similar to the area of Como in the north of Italy. It is never too cold, even if during winter we get snow time by time, not last year.

No leave turning yet in my neck of the woods, but the acorns are dropping like rain from the trees. If I don't watch it I just might tumble over them, lol. Persimmons remind me of Thanksgiving. My Mom always made a persimmon pudding for that holiday. Before you know it, soup time will be here for me too
