Charles Aznavour died today

It is a sad news that I heard today at the radio, Aznavour died last night at 94 in his home in the French Alps. He was born in Paris by accident in 1924 where his parents, from the Armenian diaspora victim of a genocide in Turkey, were trying to obtain a visa to migrate to the USA. They finally settled in France, and we got with Charles one of the best French singers and lyricists of the 20th C. He wrote about 1000 songs and was considered like a living monument in France. He had created a charity to help the development of Armenia in 1988 that collected more than $150 millions, was named ambassador of Armenia near the Unesco in 1995, «National Hero of Armenia» in 2004 and received the Armenian citizenship in 2008 from the President. Charles Aznavour started to sing at 8 and never stopped, he had given his last concert in Tokyo a few days ago. His French was rich and subtle, difficult to translate accurately in another language. I heard for the first time Aznavour singing in English today. Well, he had a strong French accent, but it makes our charm. I have chosen to give you a link to an English version of «Hier encore» because the translation of this one is good. The original French song was from 1964. Enjoy.
Versione americana della classica " Hier Encore "

@amadeo The news reached Canada an hour ago, it will not be long to reach your place. Thank you, it was a bit difficult to find a song accurately translated, his French was too full of nuances and I would not have thought that he was so popular out of France. I was born with his songs, he was somebody that I would not have expected to die. Sad news.

I have liked his singing from the first time I heard him. I also enjoyed his movies. A very talented man. He will be missed. Great song you highlighted! One of my favorites: She
Charles Aznavour - She 1974 She may be the face I can't forget A trace of pleasure or regret May be my treasure or the price I have to pay She may be the son...

He was writing great lyrics and was compared to Sinatra here for his voice. I would not have thought that he was so popular out of France. Due to his long career, I listened to his songs since my birth and I was not expecting him to die before his 100th birthday concert. It has been a shock.

I do not know for Italian, but I had a hard time to find a good English translation of a song. My first choice was "La Bohème", but the translation was too bad.

@topffer I liked the Italian version of "Que c'est triste Venise" (Com'è triste Venezia). The Italian lyrics were not a translation, even if some phrases were very similar.

He was also known in Germany but surely not as famous as in France.

A musical legend in France. Let's not forget his acting career: Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player.

Oh, sorry, I wrote this post too quickly and I forgot that. My preferred movie with him is "1 Taxi for Tobruk".

He never stopped to sing, but was indeed less popular than in the 1970's. His voice had changed but was still great.

So, so sorry to read about Charles Aznavour passing. My 3 sisters and I grew up listening to him and were all crazy about him. Definitively, my favorite French song writer.

Same for me, and I was not expecting him to die. I was not realizing that he was 94 years old, as he was still singing.

I heard that he was the only singer able to stand in a Rolls. A little man, but a great singer and lyricist.

I found an older video, also in English, where he sang it in 1966. I see many American artists also sang it, but some were around 2005-2008, and others just a few years ago. Do you know who sang it first it when? If he sang it first, in 1964 and then later in English I'm impressed that it's still as popular today. I am not familiar with his name but I like the way he sings it.

That's a great version and he has a delightful accent . You're right about a Frenchman's accent being part of his charm.

It would not have been my choice in French, but his lyrics are full of nuances, and a literal attempt to translate them fails. "Hier encore" found a good translator and several records of it were made by English speaking singers later.
