One thing I do quite often is go to the "Explore" tab then pick "Discussions with no response". That way you can pick up a new discussion very quickly and can be the first to get it on a roll! As you have just discovered, this is a helpful encouragement!

You did it for a first timer, not bad you got a lot of responses. just answer back and forth, converse! avoid saying "friend" or "dear" if you can avoid, otherwise, it is fine.
