A Ghoulish Event (or three.. or four)

United States

A mylotter here has reminded me of several things that I have read in the past. These are legends / supposedly true stories around my State and / or Town. The first I may have written about before, but I'll write about it again. Several teenagers were in an old Moravian cemetery one late night in the 1970's. They had been drinking, as teenagers sometimes do. One of the people from the group had been leaning against a headstone and talking to the person interred. Towards the end of the night, when they were packing up to go, the person invited the interred individual to come along, using the deceased man's name. A few days later, after several odd and scary things had happened, the group invited the spirit back into the car with them and drove back to the grave site. There they told the spirit that he was home and needed to stay. No further odd occurrences happened. I'm also sure that the teenagers probably never went back to that cemetery again. Another : Now I don't remember the full details but I had read about this a few weeks ago. A woman hung herself from a bridge after her child died from complications of an illness. I believe she is supposed to be visible during a certain day or days. There are several others, some of which I believe to be urban legends that supposedly happened in several different States and / or possibly countries.

Near the country farm of my grandmother there was a very old mansion, where it seems that odd things happened in the past. Going near the mansion during the night you heard strange noises and muttered voices.

I wonder if there were squatters there that were just more active at night? Or if it was just the souls of servants etc going about their work.

@snowy22315 I did with my cousin and some friends. We wanted to see if it was real and we got a serious big scare.

There were a couple that my son knew about the bridge in the county where we used to live. I couldn't recite them though. I have heard that spirits don't haunt cemetaries, but the houses and property where they used to live, or they passed through. Supposedly there are people in certain areas that see Confederate solidiers all the time. Many Civil War battlefields are supposed to be haunted, and since they were the scene of great suffering, and angst..it kind of makes sense.

I was watching a show with my brother in law one day, I can't even remember the name of it. He had just got done saying that it would be "so cool" our city was featured and BAM that was what that episode was about. Their was a soldier involved, but I don't recall the details. They tried to find the place referred to in the episode but no real luck on that part, of course I'm sure that the show gives a bit of false information and the B-Roll they use is probably nowhere near where the actual house is. Anyway, I don't know what to believe when it comes to cemeteries and hauntings.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I do believe there are legitimate haunted places, but I think for instance if you stayed in a hotel that was supposed to be haunted..your mind would start playing tricks on you..and you would conjure up a spirit, even if none existed.

@snowy22315 I agree. I've seen videos of supposed hauntings in hotels and I'm not so sure I believe them. Only if the hotel was once a home or if it is old enough to have seen many souls pass through it's doors.

The first story has a big element of Vampire stories...Or it seems like it at least. That ghosts have to be invited into your car or house or whatever. I mean, the story doesn't say that but if it weren't so, why wouldn't more ghosts go with the kids? And every other cemetery visitor for that matter? Of course, unlike Vampires, the ghosts respect a revoked invitation... Are ghosts the real inspiration for the Vampire legends? OR are ghosts and Vampires both real and just happen to have one similar trait?

Vampires are different than ghosts and so no, ghosts aren't the real inspiration for vampire legends. I think Vampirism probably began close to, or because of, a mad queen who bathed in the blood of virgin girls because she believed it would keep her beautiful and youthful.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, Vampires and Ghosts are different but if that first story is true, they have something in common. Actually, the Vampire legends can be traced back to Apollo in Greek mythology (Mythology is what we call former valid religions now because Christianity won), who cursed Ambrogio, so that sunlight would burn his skin. Then Ambrogio lost his soul to Hades through some form of gambling. Of course, that was nothing new at the time, but everything that came before it has since been lost.

To the west of Denver, on the way to Boulder, there is a decent sized town called Louisville. A vampire is supposedly buried in the cemetery there. We went and checked it out one night. He does not have a proper headstone, rather, some guy poured him a crude cement slab. There is a gnarled, dying tree coming out of the grave that is unlike any other tree in the cemetery. Goth kids often go there and hold seances and stuff, and some dude used to hide in the bushes and jump out and scare them. However, according to the newspaper article we read, a lot of weird, creepy things have happened there over the years.

Wow, that's kind of cool to be honest. I wonder why a tree grew from that spot and why it's so gnarled and dying? How old is the tree?

@ScribbledAdNauseum - I really don't know. It looked pretty damn old at the time. It was so different from the other trees that it stood out like a sore thumb.

We also have a lot of urban legends, but I don't know if some did happen in the past.

Yes, it's all a matter of belief. Some things seem more far fetched than others and you are less likely to believe them. I have more I could tell.
