Twelve bikes for twelve Nepalese children

Vince is providing me with a lot of material for discussions although he doesn’t know I am swiping his photos off Facebook for my own purposes. I might have to make him an honorary member of myLot.
I wanted to share that the last of the bikes for the schoolchildren of Nepal have arrived and been paid for. For those who haven’t been able to keep up with what’s been happening the bikes have been donated by myself and Vince with funds raised by us and with the generous help of our friends and community.
In his FB post Vince said all bar one of the students live at least 5 kilometres from the school and one lives 10 kms away. I’m sure the roads are mostly rough tracks too. The children will keep the bikes until they leave school. They don’t seem to be smiling a lot but I’m sure they were pleased.

I remember when I was able to afford to buy my bike and the difference it made for me to get to work. I had a weekend job when I was in grade school. Before that I had to walk or take the bus which were not frequent in those days. I'm sure they will really appreciate the gift and your kindness.

@JudyEv I would think it would or else they wouldn't take them.

I'm glad that they got themselves a bike, I could only have a stand treadmill bike. Good for them.

I think that in some cultures, if you are in a very important and big situation, they show the importance by being solemn. I don't know if that is true for Nepalese culture but in Japan we are not allowed to smile for official photographs.

I'm sure the children are just a little camera shy and will definitely be happy when they can bike to school.

That's a wonderful thing to do, Judy. Kudos to yourself and Vince. What happens to the bikes once the students leave school?

It must be very difficult for some children to get to school but often they are the ones who are desperate to go.

I don't know how many have such a distance to travel but I guess there are plenty. The headmaster used a guide of how far away the child lived and the level of poverty.

@JudyEv That sounds like the fairest way to do it.

@wolfgirl569 I hope it doesn't cause a lot of jealousy. That is the problem sometimes with something like this.

I'm sure the children will be motivated to be in school everyday, Ms. Judy. That lady in red looks like a sister to you :)

I suppose she does a bit. She is a German backpacker who met up with the leader (they are both into Buddhism) and took the opportunity to be involved. I'm sure it is making it easier for her to see some of the sights that many tourists would have trouble accessing.
As regards schooling, I think the children there are more motivated than perhaps some Western children are.

@JudyEv Yes, generally it's those who are deprived in life who are more motivated to go to school. Oftentimes, those who are well off are lazy to go to school. What an irony! Good thing the German backpacker has joined the generous endeavor of Vince's group. Bless them all!

Years ago I read that all the world's poorest countries are in Africa except Nepal which is in Asia. I am delighted the 12 children from Nepal now each have a bike to cycle to and from school on. Walking 5 to 10 kilometres can be difficult. My son's school is a 23 minute walk away. My daughter's school is 15 minutes walk away.

That is quite a walk too. It is good that these kids now have bikes.

The link in your later post did not work but I copied and pasted to get to this.
I salute Vince and his dedicated team for reaching out to the disadvantaged not only with cash and kind but also through visits to distant places. Humanity has no borders but only a few have such largeness of the heart - siva

I'm sorry the link didn't work. Apparently if there is an apostrophe in the title, the links don't work. I don't know if that was the case. I think it is good that Vince was able to go to Nepal and see for himself what the situtation was and 'how things worked' in that area.

They probably don't have a lot of experience smiling for a camera. That's my guess, anyway.
