I had to take a refresher for CPI. No that is not the consumer price index. CPI in this case stands for crisis prevention institute.
CPI is a method of behaving with others to avoid escalating interactions. It teaches how one might defuse an out of control or acting out person.
In the event you could not defuse a situation, CPI has models of how to act to protect yourself and others.
So we practiced non-threatening stance, and we discussed why some of our students are acting out. We practiced releasing holds and bites. We read, watched videos and discussed things.
Here is a link to the home of that program
The Crisis Prevention Institute is an international training organization that specializes in the safe management of disruptive and assaultive behavior.

I would be quite interested in having that type of training even though I wouldn't do it for my work.

There is a lot of helpful information in these classes.I have never had to use restraints, but I like the philosophy of how to deal with escalating behavior.

@GardenGerty I would hope to never have to use the restraints but the rest of the information would interest me very much.

It is interesting, and useful. I do not plan to need to ever restrain people, but I do like to know how to get away safely, and how to act to help people stay calm.

You are welcome. I have been required to take the class several times. It is a good reminder of why some people act out and how to respond to help them calm down.

None of us want to handle a situation where people get upset, but some of this information helps keep it from getting worse.

You probably have a lot of the skills to talk with people calmly, because you worked in the public so long.
