American Football in London will it ever be popular?

Of course we have had soccer in the US for many years, and is popular with some, but I am not sure it will ever replace American football..that killer sport most of us love. I turned on my fave CBS show today and they are playing an American football game in London..something they do at least once a year..The NFL commission has been promoting it for years, and seem to be making some inroads..with the number of people that are attending the game, although some of them could be ex pats I think. Do you think American style football will ever be popular in Europe?

More than one a year would help.

No, their football (soccer) is king just like soccer will never be king in the US.

No I do not. Europe is steeped in themselves and are not really open to American football even though they have gained some traction there.

You may well be right. I would be surprised if soccer is ever as widely followed here as football is.

@Courage7 It may take many free exhibitions and giveaways to woo the crowd. Too bad it would be too expensive to have a training camp there.

I do not think it will be popular even with our teams playing there once a year.

Yeah, it's not enough to get any real interest going.

I think it is unlikely to really take off here, for a number of reasons. One of these is that we already have three codes of football that are played professionally in the UK and which attract large crowds - Association (i.e. soccer) Rugby Union and Rugby League. Is there an audience for a fourth? Highly doubtful. Another is that the nature of American Football may suit American attitudes to sport, but is foreign to the way Brits like it. It is just too "stop go" and too repetitive. We also like to be able to see our sporting heroes and not have them encased in body armour and helmets! We also have the sneaking suspicion that if a sport need cheerleaders to keep the crowd enthused, the game itself can't be up to much!

Good points all! You are right about all the stop and go..great analysis.
