Got a big scare last night!

Kind of ironic it happened around Halloween, but last night, I noticed my cat looking at something..and perhaps trying to bat it around..I am not sure..anyway, I hustled over to look at it, and it was a BLACK WIDOW SPIDER!!! Yikes, of course, I yelled at the cat who ran away, and battered the spider to death. I don't get why it is spider central in here..I bought peppermint oil and sprinkle it around. It seems like once a week, I am finding a new spider. I shudder to think what would have happened had it bit the cat. Iam going to have to inspect all the weather stripping. I don't know how they are getting in.

Me too, they are quite poisonous..it probably would have killed the cat..because I don't think any vets in this immediate area are open past about 6 PM and probably none on Sunday. I would have had to go to the city, and by then, it would probably be too late.

@hillhjill There are a few vets within about 20 miles, you would think they could rotate emergency services or something.

@snowy22315 Yeah I think we should all have places where bets are open longer.

Yes, they are dangerous to animals and people. Both the Black Widow and Brown Recluse spider bites can do serious damage to humans.

That's scary! Black widow spider is highly poisonous, right? Luckily you and your cat are okay. Glad that you managed to notice your cat when it is "playing" with the spider. I have not seen a black widow spider before. I don't know if I am able to recognize it if I've spotted one.

I think I got to him before he actually put paws on the spider...but I am sure that was next!

@playertwo They are big and scary. I have seen some other larger spiders..but these are quite threatening looking.

My younger son, who is deathly afraid of spiders, found a black widow living in his storage room at the apartment complex. He shut the door and then duct taped it to make sure the spider couldn't get out. A quick trip to Lowe's for spider killer and he was back, blasted his storage room, and killed the black widow, dozens of other spiders, and a handful of other bugs.

I didn't know they sold spider killer. I wonder if it is safe for household pets?

@snowy22315 I don't know if it is. My son found it at Lowe's. It might be made by Terro.

@playertwo I am glad we do not have any. The last scare we had was some bees flying into our home and not sure what happened to them and then one flew out the other day. My cat picked up on my reaction to them and was afraid to eat so I stood by and made she was ok and she ate.

Lavender essential oil. I hear that even if you have your house treated there will still be spiders, and most of them (not your black widow) are harmless. I used to put lavender essential oil in the carpet shampooer for my clients.

I have heard peppermint oil is the best and I have some..Maybe I need to use it on a daily instead o weekly basis. I have no fear of garden variety spiders..black widows and brown recluse are something else though.

Yes, I would have just swept it out the door..but I didn't want it to escape, nor did I want it to find it's way back into the house!

OMG! I am so glad you got your cat away and killed it. I keep cans of Raid all over the house just in case. I’m afraid of any kind of spider.
