My holiday cactus is determined to grow even though I've not watered it for much too long. And another thing learned recently.

I've been needing to trim what I thought was my Christmas cactus. I've not watered it on a regular basis for six months or more as I enjoyed it more when it was smaller. This morning after returning from an ultrasound of my innards I noticed some blooms which I've highlighted. There's a few more blooms, but I can't see them in this view. I took a minute to get the trimming done and then gave it a drink. Often I don't give it water until it begins to bloom but it rarely gets blooms on the whole plant probably because it's lacking the water. What I learned last week it's that I might actually have a Thanksgiving cactus and not a Christmas one as I thought. I've had people tell me theirs was an Easter one which I always discounted because I thought all of them were Christmas ones that bloomed whenever they felt like it. I discovered that the shapes of the leaves are somewhat different and some have a small tuft on top. Some leaves are almost completely round or at least rounder than I've seen before. I don't know why I didn't take some pictures are the job we did last week when I learned this as she had tables I'd various varieties and many lead types. I think she said there's a Facebook group for these plants, for the owners/growers of course and someone from California sent her a different type of flower she's waiting to see once it blooms.

There are indeed a lot of Christmas cactuses which bloom earlier in the year. Giving too little water rarely hurts. Giving too much is more hurtful for plants.

I'd think watering every six months wasn't enough at all though. It's like my plant wakes me up with a reminder to water but producing a few blooms. For now I will not forget to give it some each week. What's this one with these leaves called over there, ML @maluse ? Or are they all considered Christmas cacti with different variations? Here I think it's called a Thanksgiving cactus, but no other country celebrated that so that can't be universal.

@MarshaMusselman Only the type you show in the photos here is called Christmas cactus as far as I know.

@MALUSE I looked it up and found this article. I'm not sure that I'll get it to link. Nope that didn't work yet.

@MarshaMusselman They do have a reputation for thriving with very little water - they are a staple of Westerns set in deserts

We will see how well it grows once it blooms for awhile. It may only produce a few blooms since it's barely had any water since last winter

Nice that is is in bloom! The only cactus I have, if it can be called cactus, are a couple of Aloe Vera plants. I wonder if they ever bloom. One of them does have a little baby aloe.

A little baby one sounds nice even if it doesn't flower. I had a fern once for many years that I watered regularly and it wasn't until I saw one a someone else's house that I found it could flower. I never saw that again though.

Mine always starts to bloom around thanks giving and stays around till Christmas. I have a new one with white blooms, which bloomed around Easter this year. The Easter leaves were longer, while the Christmas/holiday cactus is kind of rounded.

Interesting. Mine must be an American Thanksgiving and Easter one. I thought it just bloomed whenever it wanted to.

Most bloom twice a year, and I think it does short of bloom when it wasn't or maybe when Allie the conditions are right for it.

I had this kind of cactus once, and somebody told that it should have no water in August, then it would get flowers in December. Well, these flowers seem to have their own time tables..

I used to have a Christmas cactus that bloomed nowhere near Christmas but it was pretty when it did bloom. What color flowers does your cactus have?
