Do you have your phone near you (cell) when you go to bed?

A friend of mine has been struggling with insomnia lately. One of the things we talked about was not, having his phone charging by his bed at night. To instead take the phone and put it in another room to charge at night. That got me thinking, do other people charge their phones right by the beds? They, phones are wonderful devices. They are changing the world around us for the better. But they are destroying sleep patterns. The simple question do you charge your phone by your bed? The complex question did you know having it by your bed at night would reduce your chances of deep restful sleep?

@tech40 actually its due to distraction (at least the current study). A distracted or active brain doesn't sleep as well

@DocAndersen yes that's right, sometimes the cellphone rings at night when there is a notification coming in and it makes our sleep wake up

@DocAndersen I heard news about exploding phone due to over charging so I do not want that to happen. And also it will be easier to look for your gadgets too.

No. It's people allowing phones to destroy sleep with their obsession over calls and texts.

@DocAndersen - The way my kids use it I'm not so sure it is affecting their sleeping habits. Many people use alarm clocks. They use phones as alarm clocks. However, my granddaughter uses her phone for other things. I spent the night at my daughter's apartment and woke up in the middle of the night to find that little one playing games on her phone. That is not cool! I can only advise my daughter about parenting. I can not tell her how to raise her own child. I hope she stops that. It is a very bad habit.

I do not keep the telephone in the bedroom, as well as nothing electronic, my husband is sensible to electromagnetic fields. I also keep the wi-fi turned off all the time on our router.

This is a big no no because according to them the radiation from your phone will cause some health issues on you in the future, but since i wake up so early because my husband does, just to get myself back to bed, i play my favorite documentaries on ipad.

I think the reason a nearby phone is inclined to disturb sleep is the knowledge that it is a functioning communication tool, so there may be a temptation to check it whenever we wake momentarily, instead of going straight back to sleep. I keep mine near the bed, as it is my alarm clock (I'm sure that is the case with many of us) but I switch off wifi at night, so there is nothing to entice me to take a glance at it if I wake during the night. I don't believe it disturbs my sleep.

@DocAndersen Divided by a common language here, I fear! When we say someone "would argue that" we mean that they would take that position in an argument. But from your context I feel you mean the opposite - am I right? If so, what would their reasoning be? What specifically about having a phone nearby would disturb sleep if its ability to communicate has been switched off?

@NormanDarlo sorry the American version is I would disagree. I suspect you would need to read the studies but they say if you have the phone near the bed, it is something that your mind wanders to changing the actual pattern of your sleep. I was curious as to the overall reality of the Mylot audience. It has been an interesting conversation so far!

Doctors (based on the study just released) would argue that. In fact they would say it does impact your sleep.

I leave my smartphone in the living room at night. I'm very light sensitive at night. The alarm clock is placed so that I need to sit up to see the red numbers (blue kept me awake), and it's on hubbies side of the bed. When i visit my sister we often sleep in the same room that her wifi router is in. I've been known to stack books all around it to block out those little lights.
