i always default to sunny side up because it takes too long to cook, cool, peel and slice boiled eggs. now i'm thinking if i boiled several eggs after dinner, then store them in the fridge, i can just take one or two, warm them up in a bowl of hot water then straight to the egg slicer. so my questions are: would you let the boiled eggs cool completely then store in the fridge with the shell on? or would you peel them first? if you peel the boiled eggs, would you put them in a container with water in the fridge? how many days can i store boiled eggs in the refrigerator? will they have that dark ring around the yolk? thanks in advance.

I boil eggs almost everyday, but never store them. I think storing them without the shells would make it easier for you to use.. Peeling the shells off after it has been in the fridge would be difficult, I guess. Maybe you could store then in an airtight container or vacuum sealed bags for a couple of days.

@sofssu we've done that, stored them in the shell for weeks at a time. But, we then eat them cold. If the eggs are a couple weeks old they are easier to peel even after storing in the fridge.

I never keep boiled eggs in the refrigerator, I only boil the number I need. I would peel them and place in a glass container, without water.

I normally don't store boiled eggs . . . but if I did, I would take the shell off and then store them - no water. I've had a heck of a time peeling a cold egg . . . so after boiling, I cool them down in a bowl of water and ice for like 5 or so minutes - then I peel them. I think that gray ring around the yolk is from cooking them too long.

@hereandthere Yep! If you don't do the ice water thing, the egg will continue to cook in its heat (I said gray, but I guess online they describe it as green).

i think putting them in ice water immediately is what prevents the dark ring. yeah, even room temp boiled eggs are a pain to peel.

The dark ring is from cooking them not storing them. I usually keep an extra egg carton and write 'boiled' on top. I actually have one carton aside to begin doing this again. The eggs will last longer with the shells on. They get weird when you've had them too long. They should last a week or more depending on how old they were when you boiled them. We prefer waiting a couple weeks before boiling as the shells peel off easier that way. We keep them in hand mostly to add to salads. I'm thinking of starting to eat just where for a snack too. If they get too old after boiling in the shell they should either stink, be a weird color, or become slimy. I would leave them in the shell in the fridge and eat them cold. What would you use hot boiled eggs for?

@hereandthere I've never heard of warning boiled eggs after the fact. Have you ever poached an egg before? Cooking it when your ready to eat is probably your best option.

I can't really help you yere but I wouldn't be putting them in water. I think if you plunge them into cold water once they're cooked they're not supposed to get the dark ring. I would store with the shells on in a bowl in the fridge. Good luck and I hope you'll let us know how it goes.

yes, i always transfer them in a bowl of cold water after boiling. i guess storing them with the shell is better. i just hope the papery membrane don't stick too much when i warm and peel them.

@hereandthere Perhaps you'll have to try one or two and see what happens.

If I'm going to store boiled eggs in the future, I'll make sure they're hard boiled. I'd let them cool first, peel and then store in a covered container. No water in it. Perhaps let them last for max 2 days? I'd heat the egg by pouring freshly boiled water into it.

yes, it's hardboiled. if with shell, i'm hoping the membrane wouldn't stick too much and make it hard to peel. but if shelled and stored without water, won't it get slimy?

@hereandthere try peeling the boiled eggs in a bowl of cold water. :o) it should make peeling a lot easier and you get to wash off whatever icky stuff that goes with every egg.

Sometimes, left over boiled eggs are stored in our ref with their shelsl on. That way, the next day they can be just placed in a bowl with boiled water and eaten.

@hereandthere not it's they were older eggs before they got boiled. Otherwise, I've heard that if you begin with cold water in the past and the eggs and slowly bring them to a boil it will help them peel faster/easier. But I've never tried it that way

When I boil eggs, I always make a few extra and store those unpeeled in the refrigerator. I use them cold.

I boil eggs every week and we just leave the shell on, put them in a bowl and into the fridge. We usually don't have anymore by the next week when I boil more, just makes it easier to make tuna salad or too slice them for salads. I take one out, run it under water and then peel it. Its pretty convenient for us. They get the ring around the yoke if they are boiled too long but they are still good.

I always have hard boiled eggs in the house since my wife likes them very much. They are super easy to make, and I just store them, shells on, in the fridge. They actually keep for quite a while, so it's not too terrible to have a dozen or more ready. I boil them, and then dredge them in cold water, put them in the fridge, and voila! Hard boiled eggs that can be eaten by themselves, sliced for a salad, or for whatever use you might find.

When I celebrate, I usually do not hold the usual boiled eggs in the refrigerator for a day.
