We’re trying hard to get everyone in the family eating their 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day – but it can be tricky when you have a fussy child. Little One has very selective tastes shall we say – she won’t touch bananas, strawberries, clementines, plums, apricots, raisins or many other fruits loved by children, only apples and the occasional orange, and she doesn’t like many vegetables either except carrots, sweetcorn, edamame (soy) beans, cucumber, peppers (as long as they are not cooked) and olives. I guess that’s not too bad but if she finds some other thing she likes it is a cause for celebration! The other day she discovered she likes dried cranberries – hurrah! As she was eating one she picked out the little bits inside and asked ‘Are these the seeds?’ ‘Yes’ I told her, so she asked ‘can we plant them?’ I explained that we didn’t have the right conditions to grow them, so of course she asked where they do grow and I turned to YouTube for something to show her. And that’s when I discovered my newest favourite presenter. Together we watched this video about growing cranberries – then we watched several others about peppers, lemons and mushrooms. Little One loved them – and so did I. They seem to strike just the right balance between informative and patronizing, leading the viewer through the topic slowly but not just filling time with pointless shots. I just watched the Blueberry one and I’m looking forward to watching more, and hoping they will make others! All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2018.

@1hopefulman the others are interesting too - and it's nice to be able to show children so clearly where food comes from. I hope they do more!

I've watched the video. What a strange fruit and harvesting process! It doesn't grow in Europe.

No it doesn't, but northern European countries do have their own range of indigenous berries, such as Lingon berries in Scandinavia.

@Fleura I'd never heard or seen the term lingon berry. I looked it up. They also grow in Germany.

@Fleura That is something I have not understood. May be Americans do not like home made, they prefer anything coming from a can.

The strangest part of the video is at the end - she shows us how to make a lovely fresh cranberry sauce - and then she suggests molding it to make it look as though it came from a can! Why would anyone do that?

Your post made me smile. There's nothing better (to this old researcher and child psychologist) than doing research with a little kid. I find that kids like to eat what they grow. Got seeds?

My girls love to grow things, but they still won't eat most of them - not yet anyway! At least in later life they'll have a headstart in self-sufficiency!

Funny isn't it? Both my girls love olives; I couldn't stand them until I was in my 20s and even then I had to be weaned onto them gradually by friends tempting me with the mild-flavoured sort.
