Cats are no more what they used to be

The world is changing. Last spring my cat did not managed to catch a wood mouse in my home, and I had to buy a trap to get rid of it. You may think that cats are tough guys with hair in the ears, but with domestication they became sluggish. Mine spends most of the day sleeping. On the other side, natural selection has emboldened rodents, and they are now hunting cats. If you don’t believe me, watch this short video of a rat running after a cat. It was published this weekend by a French newspaper, «Ouest France». It is a lamentable reality. My next pet will be a rat.

Internet can ruin a reputation, all the neighboring cats are now aware that this one is a coward.

@LadyDuck I suspect that it is the rat that put this video online.

maybe you need to buy lots of mouse traps, because maybe there will be lots of mice in your spring

I do not understand how a wood mouse came in my house. I am in the center of a city, I would not have been surprised by a mouse or a rat, but a wood mouse? They eat only fruits and vegetables, and the nearest park is at 200m from my home. Kind of mystery.

@topffer You can use Camphor to get rid of the rat, you certainly don't believe it but you can try it that mice don't dare with the camphor smell

I had heard that before, but I thought that it was with those big mice only. I believe now that mice can devour cats in minutes if the so wish.

@topffer My husband told me that once, when he was a teen, he saw a rat under his bed. So he looked at it and growled. The rat rat to him and he had to flee

@marguicha They are not nice creatures. I wrote that my next pet will be a rat, but it is the last animal that I would like to have as a pet.

It was only a small sewer rat, one is probably not enough, but if they had been 10... I know by experience that rats can be aggressive. A morning when I was 7 or 8, I saw a big rat eating something on the pavement when I was going to school. I put a foot near the rat to frighten it and... it jumped on my shoe. The one who ran away was not the rat.

it happens when we feed them 3 or 4 square meals a day at a fixed time like what most humans do so they don't see the need to hunt anymore

This one tried, but it ended like in a cartoon. You are probably right, my cat was too fat, I had to change his food, he was eating too much canned boxes.

I have watched the similar video before. Now a cat isn't the mouse's natural enemy ,because they are born to living in comfort and don't know why and how to catch a mouse. That is exactly the law of use and disuse.

It is very true, mine is hunting birds but was not interested by the wood mouse at home, and did not tried to catch it. We feed them too well.

Our dog goes after mice and kills them but I don´t know if he would a rat he just might. Once I lived in a place where there were a lot of rats around being by a river. Our next door neighbour came down a killed a huge rat with her shoe and I thought she was so brave as it was a very big one and she polished it off just like that. The rat was in the doorway downstairs and I could not get past it so Placida came down and said don´t watch and zas it was gone. Not that I condone that either I have no wish to kill them outright but she did it just like that very brave as they can go for you and do a lot of damage. I don´t blame you for running off from the rat either.

@topffer One can hardly blame you for that. I am not a rat lover either but they are there I know and some as big as rabbits sometimes. Placida just went and did the rat in and they give me the shivers and not good ones. I suppose its in our D.N.A. to fear them and mainly because they have sneaky look about them and you never know what they are going to do next. They are said to be very intelligent also but I have never been close enough to them to find out no thank you. Also the diseases they can carry ugh. They make me shudder not so much with fear but disgust again its probably what we have learned you know in knowing how to survive.

@lovinangelsinstead21 It is not in the DNA of everybody : an online petition had been started to stop to kill them in Paris ! Now you see them running during the night near the Seine, and there are hundreds of rats. It is frightening and disgusting, I would not be surprised if the plague was coming back.

Oh, yes, it was courageous, and I would not try to do that. I am a bit afraid by rats since I was a kid. We were living near a large park, and there were rats in the park (they are back in the parks in Paris : because of animal lovers complaining the city do not kill them). A morning, when I was 7 or 8, I saw a big rat eating something on the pavement when going to school. I put loudly a foot near its face to scare it and... it jumped on my shoe. The one scared was not the rat. I ran to the school without looking back to check if it was running after me like in the video. Since that event I consider that rats are dangerous.

That rat was a bully! I guess the cat was truly a "scaredy cat" . Out here, most people keep their feline friends indoors - they don't get to use their instincts, so perhaps they lose it. I see loose cats here and there but I have never seen them with a rat catch (and I hear there are plenty of mice/rats running around outdoors at night!).

@topffer Ah, how rats have become intelligent too - this one knows how to use social media . I think of my mother in law's neighbor's cats. The neighbors put them outdoors for the day and they'd go to my mother in law's house as she would let them indoors for the day .

@much2say Mine prefers to go outdoors during the night and comes back for the breakfast, then puts a "Do not disturb" sign on his basket and sleeps until 4 or 5pm.

This rat wants to be respected, he posted himself this video online to ruin the reputation of this poor cat. My cat was living outdoors when he adopted me, he would not be able to stay indoors long. I believe it depends of the cat, Persian cats can stay indoors without protesting, but for a tabby cat it is difficult.

@JudyEv "Tel est pris qui croyaIt prendre" The one caught is the one who wanted to catch. It is the moral of a fable from La Fontaine, "The Rat and the Oyster". A rat sees an opened oyster near the sea and wants to eat it but the oyster catches the rat.

Things does change a lot. My cat in my house will treat mouse as their friend. They did not bother about the mouse when they passed in front of them. They sleep at day time even the sun ray shine directly on them. At night time, they will went out for "meeting".

The so big cat was running away from the small war freak rat. I think, he was just afraid of how aggressive the rat is. But since the cat is much bigger, it shouldn't be afraid of the small rat.
