It happened a year ago tonight!

It was last Thanksgiving night that I started hurting all over. I went to bed, but soon started vomiting every half hour and then started having chills. I know I should have woke my husband up (our grandson was here that Thanksgiving also), but I kept thinking I would get better. That's what I get for thinking! Early the next morning I told my husband we had to go to the hospital. By then I wasn't vomiting (nothing left) and didn't feel so terribly sick. I knew not to eat anything, but we went through the drive through at BoJangles to get the guys a biscuit. Decided to go to a smaller hospital about a half hour from here, rather than going an hour to the large hospital in another town, mainly because I knew there would be a terribly long wait at the big hospital. Praise God, we went to the closer one. I've written about this before, but it turned out a kidney stone had blocked the urethra and made the urine back up. I was in septic shock. The doctors promptly got everything started and I was pretty much out of it by then. The worse part for me was the blood test every two hours around the clock because they had trouble getting a vein. We learned two days later that I had come really close to dying. I'm so thankful we didn't drive to the larger hospital...I most likely wouldn't have survived it. After three days, I was released, although it took me a while to recover. Two weeks later, I had surgery to remove the stone. I just really had no idea I was that seriously ill. I've teased my husband and grandson that they would have felt really bad if I had died and they had stopped to get a biscuit! But God was so merciful and I'm very thankful to be here for another Thanksgiving! Hope your holiday was full of family, friends, faith, and a feast!

Wow. That's scary. Wanna hear something pathetic? My uncle thought he was having a heart attack so he asked his wife to take him to the hospital. She stopped by the has station to get a Big Gulp. Poor guy had to have a quadruple bypass, but she wanted a drink.

@AmbiePam You're probably kind of glad you're not blood related to her.

Goodness, sometimes we just don't realise how serious a condition is. Thanksgiving will always have a special meaning for you now.

A sister-in-law of mine had this last year about this time of the year. She told me that she really suffered, and she was an ER RN all of her life, so I know that she has seen her fair share of suffering and doesn't take a word like that lightly. I hope that you never have that again.

@1creekgirl Yes, she is back to her usual self. As an RN she is concerned of it happening again, and being a retired lady in her 70's, she is a roadrunner, and isn't always ready to go into the doctor's office at the drop of a hat.

Is your sister-in-law okay now? I know for sure I'll go to the hospital sooner if it ever happens again.

Thanks, Laurel. It makes you realize how short life can be. Are you feeling better now? Are you getting good reports from your heart doctor?

Man. What a bummer. I have heard of people having stones and never heard a good tale about it. I pray I never have to experience such a thing, and I pray you never have to again either.

Thank you so much! Having a kidney stone attack when it's trying to move is extremely painful. What I had was that when the stone tried to move, it was so big it blocked the urethra and all that poison was backing up and caused the septic shock. A lot of people die from that or have organ damage. It was a true miracle from God that I lived and had no damage.

@1creekgirl Oh man. Yeah. I never thought about the consequences of that. Didn't know stones could be deadly, but it makes sense why they could be. An ordeal for sure, and hope you never have to deal with it again. Are there any preventive measures you can take to avoid stones?

did they do x-rays to find it? except for the vomiting, i have had same symptoms . i keep telling the doc i have chills some when it is warm in the house and sweating with the chills but she keeps saying it's the change in weather. i don't want to go back to that same hospital again ever i was at before. they did some crazy mistakes there.

Yes, I had xrays and a CT scan. The chills that I had that night at home were so violent, I couldn't speak. But I still didn't realize how serious that was. Is there a different doctor you can see? Hope you'll be well soon.

So glad you were alright. That is one of the things I am constantly thanking God for that I have my health and I have not been sick in ages and that I need no medications. However, It is good to remember that if you are alone you must be prepared to consider what to do if anything happens or you do get sick. Of course, the worst thing is that you cannot know how sick you really are. God certainly blessed you that Thanksgiving.
