Crazy Countdown to Christmas

When I was 9, I marveled at the countdown of Apollo 11 blasting to the moon. Ten, nine, eight seven, six, five.... Wow, I thought, that's counting backwards. Thus began my fascination of countdowns, the sense of excitement before the big boom. Until I've grown old and have to endure the crazy Christmas countdown. Look, Ebenezer Scrooge am I not, and Christmas is my favorite time of year. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. I believe in Saint Nicholas even if he isn't a canonized saint. Is he? Catholicism is in the heart. A reason to automatically click off the boob tube or the car radio soon as the BER months countdown commences. It isn't Christmas yet. Christmas is actually the shortest season in the church calendar. It has only eight days, from 25 December to 1 January. It is called the Octave of Christmas. Before that is the Season of Advent, the cleansing time. Purgation is necessary because we are awaiting the Birth of the Messiah. This is the musing moment when everyone is advised to recollect on the past year, whether they've been good, otherwise, the huge socks will remain empty. But what happens? To my dismay. my daughter has already told me that her Christmas party would be on the 18th of December, the theme "Bedazzled." Sigh. Two things not right here: first.Christmas has become something one fits to the company's schedule. second, for merriment purposes, a theme other than Christmas is adapted. Sigh again.

I am not so happy with such a wonderful Christmas celebration going with a theme other than Christmas. I have begun my countdown. The celebration starts from 18th in our complex and it goes till mid night of 31st welcoming the new year.

That is a long celebration, too. What happens during the celebration? Do you have songs and dances? Back here, people prepare presentations for a program. Big bosses give away cheques to perfect performances. Raffle prizes such as television, cellphones, refrigerators are at stake. Bring home loot bags include quezo de bola and ham. People eat a little too much. And then there are exchange gifts.

@eileenleyva We have programs from children and residents, some prize winning games, competitions like baking and cooking, Christmas Carol singing, food stalls and games stalls by residents, some fund raising events....it goes like a carnival each evening. From 26_30th Dec, they show two movies each day on a projector which we all residents enjoy in open theatre with various eateries available at stalls. On 31st we have a DJ party and dance floor is ready to enjoy and dance into new year.

I don't think that Christmas party needs any other theme

Most people are lost in the euphoria, over enjoying by wearing themed clothes, eating and drinking, dancing, giving gifts, when Christmas is supposed to be celebrating the Lord's humble birth.

@eileenleyva very true. The true meaning of all the festivals appear to be lost somewhere

In the United Kingdom Christmas Day is 25th December. It is amazing that the true timetable of Christmas isn't the true timetable. I love to see my children happy at Christmas time with their presents. On 1st January it will be New Year' s Day. My children have 2 weeks off at Christmas. They will be back at school before 7th January.

I always look forward to Christmas for whatever reason. Then, each year I spend way too much money and get annoyed with my family anyway!

Ha ha. That is okay, though. Splurging for family on Christmas is what we live for, aside from our advocacy of course. Family keeps us sane and happy.

That's their world now, giving Christmas completely different meaning and it's no longer about Jesus anymore.

He he. Let us understand because we couldn't bring out one celebration at one time as everyone has another schedules that's why. But you have point there. It just happened that throughout time, change can occur.

If I have my way, the 25th is for family, the 26th for school and company parties. The rest of the week,m everyone could sleep and wait in silence for the noise of New Year's Eve.
