Crazy Bird Story

Gypsy, my sister's lovebird

My sister was given this Lovebird, Gypsy, by her neighbor. The neighbor was told by her lung doctor to get rid of the bird because it was not good for her breathing. No one in Karen's family would take the bird or could take care of it. So she talked my sister into it. My niece paid the pet deposit. My sister is okay with having the bird. At least now the niece will quit insisting that she will get her mother a cat or a dog. Last week the bird had a screeching fit. The cage is in front of a big picture window. She screeches a lot anyway, but this was different. She was down in the bottom of her cage. My sister looked up and there was a red tailed hawk just outside. It had tried to come in through the window, hitting its head. Several times. She had heard the thumps. When the proper animal control people talked to my sister they said this bird had been at a lot of apartment complexes. It may be too young to fend for itself, or could have been separated from its group. You never know who or what you will see out your front window. My sister almost would not travel with us for Thanksgiving, due to needing a bird sitter. Gypsy is spoiled. Likes certain television shows and classic country music. It is a rough life, I am sure.

Well I think Gypsy looks just fien. I have been thinking of getting a parrot for company since my cat Sid comes and goes all the time but I am still not sure. If I had such a bird I certainly would enjoy listening to country with it and perhaps we could form a duo

I do not know how old love birds live to be, but some parrots live to be over seventy. Better plan on living a long life with your bird, if you get one.

Some parrot types screech a lot so you might need to take that into consideration. Constant screeching would quickly get on my nerves. And neighbours might be affected too.

It has to be a rough life being a spoiled birdie. My uncle likes to watch youtube videos of people's birds epsecially the cockatoos. I've watched some with him and those birds sure have a big personality.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I do not know, she murdered her mate because he was a bully. My sister and niece think she enjoys the videos.

I appreciate the concern shown by yurv sister! She realized the danger Gypsy is facingbright now! Though gypsy may not get harmed physically by stayingbinnthe cage, but the bird may experience the most horrible emotinal exerience of his/her life! kudos to her and her poor Gypsy!

Glad the hawk could not get to the bird. The bird must have been terrified

She was. I guess this hawk was not sure where to go to get further out of the city.

I think she knew about the country music. I am not sure how she figured out about Sponge Bob, cause Karen did not watch that.

The poor lovebird must have been really frightened by the hawk.

Yes, and I imagine the outdoor birds were too. I saw hummingbirds chase a crow once this summer.

@GardenGerty Some of the smaller birds are very brave when it comes to chasing away bigger ones.

That is quite a tale. Apparently the bird was smart enough to know something was after her.

Vultures/buzzards nest in the scaffolding of the water tower in McPherson. It is interesting when they give the babies "flight training."

I understand how your sister figured out Gypsy loved country music but how did she figure out what tv shows the bird liked? I wouldn't have accepted Gypsy... Pretty and I are both quiet people. We haven't turned on a television in over 11 years now and neither one of us play music at home. (Actually, Pretty might play music when I'm gone to work. IDK. I know she doesn't play it when I'm home, though.)

I don't know the answer to that, cause if I did watch television it would NOT be Sponge Bob Square Pants. My sister has television on 24/7 and talks through it. Then the bird shrieks constantly. I do not enjoy visiting there.

@GardenGerty Wow! I wouldn't want to visit your sister either, GG. How can you hold good conversations while a television is muttering away in the same room?

I love birds and I feel so sorry for them being caged for the pleasure if humans, but once they are with humans that are dependent. Did animal control get the hawk?

Birds that are bred in captivity are pretty much at our mercy. Gypsy has a history. She had a mate, who bullied her and would not let her eat. One day she flat out killed him. Pets need good homes. Karen, the neighbor, had lots of family drama, and the bird suffered for it showing lots of stress. She is happy and spoiled with my sister.

When we were young, we had parakeets, but I find I do not have the patience now to care for a bird.

Think it would be a good idea to move the cage away from the window or at least cover the side that faces it.

I hope he found his way to a more "wild" place, where he could live as normal. I have been told that they sometimes break their own neck trying to fly into windows, and sometimes they break the windows.

It is a beautiful bird! Taking care of it means one really have to allot some time for its needs; the reason I sometimes forego owning more pets because I can not leave our home for long vacations.
