An Atheistic Bible Study The Gospels The Parable Of The Wise And Foolish Builders

Two Gospels deal with this parable and while Matthew 7:24-13:50 incorporates it into The Sermon On The Mount, Luke 6:46-11:36 doesn't give it any context. Both do deal with the same basic advice. A wise builder raises a house on solid bedrock, with plenty of shelter from the storm and rising tides or flood waters. A Foolish builder builds the property on sand, so the house has no firm foundation and falls down or gets swept away by the rising waters. It's a lesson in stating the blindingly obvious but Jesus sees only those having faith in him as being like the wise builders. In Luke's version Jesus berates his audience for saying they believe in him but not doing what he says. Of course, many might see the shifting theological disputes of Christianity means that following Jesus is building your life on soft, shifting sand-like foundations. I take the advice "literally" when I work with preschoolers "making tall buildings" out of stacky blocks. A strong foundation is important. But I see it as being about love. That firm foundation could be "faith"in God, or whatever one has faith in. But it could also be the firm foundation of knowing and trusting the other well. Jesse Winchester actually has a decent song, probably based in part on these verses. I'll see if I can find it.

@arthurchappell I got distracted as I was looking for it. I'll have to research it later. I think the Staples may have covered it too. Not sure who actually wrote it.

It seems like sand is much more solid than Christianity.

These rock constructions have survived for centuries. I wonder if they are sitting on rock below the grass
From a Christian viewpoint, the foundation of all things, under all things, is the love of God, and yet that love never looks to be solid to the foolish person, and so they need reassurance, words of truth, to create cement with their sands, to increase their faith and belief in love. The wise need this too to a certain extent, but because their foundations of faith have always been stronger, they find it easier to stand fast in love, against the fighting against love, by the worlds of fear and struggle, based around people striving for oneself, instead of growing a harvest for God, from their lives. @arthurchappell Yes, maybe we should all be more freestanding at times in our lives too, not leaning or resting on anything but ourselves. That is taking responsibility for our own lives.

Faith in anything is always helpful it seems. Faith in living every day the best.
